I'm part way into pulling the intakes and fuel injection systems for cleaning and rebuild. I've run into a snowball effect which seems to be getting out of control. Needless to say, the work is being done with the engine in place. I can't seem to get the rear intake off because of the engine coolant elbow, which in tern won't come off with the intake butterfly/throttle body which in tern won't come off until I lift the entire fuel distributer/intake unit. But it seems that in order to remove this assembly there is a coolant fitting which houses sensors and has a mounting lug which seems to obstruct removing the fuel injection assembly. Ahhhhhhhhhh. Am I reading this wrong or what. Any pioneers who've done this before with advise or sequence or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Steve; thanks for the encouragement??????? Seriously, it wasn't the news I was hoping for but it gives me the fortitude to keep going. I was (am) waivering on whether to keep digging in or cut bait. I think I'm going to keep going though. Seems that if I can get the two coolant hose feeds off the 3 way casting at the bulkhead, I should be set (hopefully).
Couple of questions from your pics though. Did you do a detail job on the engine housing and if so, what did you use? I noticed at the pic with the rear intake manifold on it looks like you have either a protective cap or the injectors are different. Any comments? With everything else apart, did you do any other elective work such as clean intakes, replace cam seals etc?
    Thanks for the help!

Yes, sorry to be the bearer of bad news ;)

I had some coolant weeping out of the 32mm hose couplings when cold -- not with the Blue Silicone water hoses shown, but with an inappropriate (IMO) thick-walled fuel hose that was used previously -- and pooling on top of the engine so the grime on the engine block and heads was "pre-softened" and cleaned up very well and easily with just a cloth, water and some elbow grease in my case.

With regard to those protective caps on the injectors, those are just what come on a new CIS injector from Bosch to keep the crude out. I replaced the injectors (I used those caps during reassembly just to keep the dirt out too) so I washed the inside and outside of the upper and lower intake manifolds when they were off with a Prestone-brand spray-on, water-rinse-off engine degreaser product that was safe for painted surfaces.

The only other "big thing" I did during this project was remove and clean the inside (and outside) of the throttle bodies and clean/wipe out the area underneath the airflow metering plates inside the fuel distributor assys.

Thanks for the info Steve. Where did you pick up your hose material. Mine are original and are definitely looking a bit shabby.

    I bought a 3' stick of the SHL32 from:

    http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/ProductDetails.asp?RecId=2798

but I'd be glad to pass on the ~22" piece I had left over (and 4 of the constant tension clamps) for $30 -- shoot me a PM if you're interested (no obligation).

See this thread for the background -- I thought (and it's worked out well) that using 4 of the narrower stock screw clamps on the dual-ridged pipe ends and 4 of the wider constant-force clamps on the single-ridged cast aluminum fittings was best:
