    Hi,

I am in the process of dismantiling my 308 engine from a 1979 gt4.

Having pretty much seperated everything at this stage (except the heads - mine are siezed - the luck of the irish - Not!).

I found the following on the floor of the garage and I have absolutely no idea what it is. I bagged and labelled everything as i removed it from the engine.

So this has part has fallen out of something my only clue is that it was covered in mucky gearbox oil on the floor (don't know if that is a red herring though?)

Please see attached photo, it looks like a bearing guide or something. The details are:

    Outside diameter 42.6 mm
    Inside diameter 34.6 mm
Diameter of the lip 38.8 mm

The back of the piece looks in the same condition as the fornt except that close to the inside diameter the whole way around the circumference is polished - like it has been rolling on a bearing.

    All thoughts/ suggestions welcomed

Camshaft lip seal? Can you account for all 4?

It is the snap ring retainer from the transmission input shaft. It goes on just before you install the outer support bearing that resides behind the driven gear in the transfer gear stack.

Looks like it could be the spacer behind the lower transfer gear/bearing that goes on the input shaft for the transmission. It may have pulled off of the shaft when you removed the bell housing. My experience is with a GTS, but I assume the GT4's have the same set up?

It fits around a c-clip that is attached to the input shaft. I don't remember the diameter of that shaft- could be around 34 mm.

Please post a pix of the other side,
Is it metal, or rubber? Looks rubbery from here.
Is the tranny separated from the engine?
Did you remove the drive axles flanges?

Does not look like the retaining ring.

I don't have one handy to verify measurements, but don't toss it, the smart cash bet is on Brian and Phillip!

Brian & Philip right on the mark I think!, I will check it tomorrow morning and confirm.

Must have fallen away from the bearing when I took it off and did not notice it!.

I will post / link to pictures of the full rebuild when I have it completed - witth learning points!

Expect a few more calls for help/ guidance between now and then :)
