My steering column and those plastic vents are getting very sticky in my 348. If I touch the steering column it will leave black crap on my fingers. Can someone post the link to the thread I saw before that had the best way to take that sticky coating off?

I would like to take the plastic off the steering column so I can clean off all that crap. Is there a special way to take that plastic off without damaging it? Any idea on the price to purchase new plastic steering column plastic parts?
    Thanks, Guys
    Eric

I used Goof Off 2 available at Lowe's. About 150 Qtips (so I did not have to disassemble the interior). You wll of course need to take the interior apart if you want to repaint the parts.
    My $.02.

Thanks for the advice guys. I plan on doing this tonight. It drives me nuts knowing something with the car needs attention.

I think it has alot to do with the humidity here in FL. My dad has a 94 348 spider, and there is no hint of stickiness on any of the plastic. Mine was fairly nasty when I got it in February, and even though I cleaned it up as soon as I bought the car I think it will continue to deteriorate until I build the climate controlled garage.

I purchased mine in July. At that time it was not sticky. As time went on it developed a tacky feel to it. Now the steering column is starting to get black on my fingers. I have the Easy Off on the plastic pieces as I type. So far so good.

Where was your car previous to S. Fla? My dad has his car in Arizona (hot and dry). I think to avoid the future melting you should remove the parts, clean them and spray them to seal it.

I was told the car was in a climate controlled garage in Maryland. I am thinking about putting an air conditioning duct in the garage to relieve some of the humidity.

I would recommend doing that. I am building a new garage and will duct some air into the new space. I have one climate controlled space, but it is full of tools, etc... I think it will help all the aspects of the car (electrical connections not corroding, interior not getting sticky, paint staying fresh, etc... Plus I was sweating to death last night applying the wheelwax, and starting to clay bar the Ferrari in the unconditioned garage.

I am no stranger to that situation. Luckily winter is approaching and you know as well as I do, those are the best months down here. Good luck with the clay. Let me know how she comes out. That’s on my “to do” list also.
