I had good luck with nail polish remover mixed with water. Weaker is better so you take off any clearcoat or paint, so you have to start mild and add until it works.

Just what Rex said... Q-Tips dipped in Nail Polish remover. Go easy and slowly.

I have done a lot of F1 with Marlboro decals for which I had to remove the "blanks".I use lacquer thiner and don't dilute it.Just dip Q-tip in it and gently rub on the decal. The m moment your Q-tip gets all "dirty" change it.In the F1 cars made by Mattel in does not do anything to the paint. However you have to be careful which model you are using it on as some have plastic parts that are either molded in the body color or painted to match.Lacquer thiner on plastic is not the best thing that can happened to a model but you don't have to worry about it on the "Elite" as they are all metal except for side mirrors.
    Hope I helped.
    Best regards
    Michael

There are special decal removers, for example Micro Set made by Microscale Industries.

What did you use to remove them? I think one of the 1/18 models I have has a clear coat over the decal. How can I get around that problem to remove decals?
