OK, I've been a little scatter brained lately. I've looked at a 330 GTC, I've looked at a BOSS 302, I've looked at a 456, and I've looked at something I can't even mention. I love too many cars! Jennie and I (well, just Jennie) have decided that we won't buy anything the next 6-12 months. However, it is important I decide really what I want as a mix of Ferraris.

Everyone knows me pretty well, but here are some rough guidelines...

#1 - I think 4 is an appropriate number of total Ferraris, even if I could afford more. I wouldn't be able to properly use more than that and its better to let others "use" a car then letting it rot in the back of your collection.

    #2 - A vintage V-12 Ferrari is a must. Likely a GTE, 330 2+2, or GTC, but who knows.

#3 - A decent track car is a must. 355 Challenge fits perfect, but a modified 360 would work too.

#4 - Need something very drivable on a daily basis. 328 is perfect, but dozens of other possibilities here.

#5 - Need a late model Ferrari, < 10 years old. However, post big depreciation hit.

#6 - Want the 4 cars to be diverse from each other in many ways, like age, cylinders, and color.

Vintage 12, 512BBi, 328GTS, 355 Challenge. Stay away from a 'late model' anything, use your $$ for maintenance instead of depreciation.

250 GTE - awesome looking vintage Ferrari. A big 2+2. Just like Enzo himself likes his cars. Keeps getting more popular. Although it seems that way. A silver one would be my choice.

512 BB / 365 GT - truly masterful. The first Berlinetta with the big 12 cylinder right there in the back. Gotta have a midengined 12 cylinder Ferrari, might as well be this baby. Could be a Testarossa as well, but in a matter of choice, I would go for one of these. The red/black two tone is the most classic.

360 Challenge - Don't know anything about racingcars, but this one is a little more uptodate and thats always good when it comes to racecars.

348 TB - My personal favourite. I'm probably the only one, but I like the 348 better than the 355. The 355 looks too soft. Take a black one with a red interior.

550 Maranello - Gotta have a frontengined 12 cylinder. It is what Ferrari is all about. Well, mostly. Color doesn't really matter, as long as it is not red. Pozzi blue would do nicely.

Depends on the budget. I think the proper number is two, but four would work. The four I'd recommend:

    1. 330 GTC, a 12 cylinder classic, great example of a 60s car. Find one that someone went overboard with the restoration, and you'll have a great car for less than it would have cost you if you'd bought it, and just maintained an average one.

    2. Race car: Get a 360 challenge car. They're cheap (under 100k) still has a class to run in, and a bunch of fun to race. They'll be falling in price as soon as the 430 challenge becomes available.

    3. 328 Magnum's car. The classic Ferrari that everyone knows. Can't have a collection without one of those.

    4. Modern car: I'd get a 99 360. Great car, reduced price, can probably get one at 100k this year or next.

    Those are my thoughts.

I'm getting a Mondial T for my second Ferrari, I think. I've got to deal with the new house at Tahoe, and when that's done, the car is next.

I just voted, but I have to add, you are missing out on the one car that would complete your collection.

Guess I don't really have to tell you which one that is, do I?

I like the 2nd choice; you get two nice v12 and two capable v8s, one for the track and one for the road. You get the best of all worlds, and the 360 definitely a daily driver. I am not a fan of 550 or 456 so other choices don't appeal to me. And, I would be hesitant to modify the 360 for track use, then the car will not be comfortable for the road use. And since your are a frequent track junky I would keep the 355C why get rod of it.

I think the Dino is the best looking of the 308/328/BB "look", so I would be happy with a Dino in replace of the 328 or a BB.

Problem with a 360 Challenge is SD2 and more dangerous for you and the car. The ground aero is fast when driven properly and in the wall when not. The 355 Challenge is "easier" and "safer" to go fast IMHO. Also a car you can crew by yourself. That ain't so for the 360 Challenge. One reason the 360 C prices have been dropping and 355 Challenge prices have remained stable past two years.

Personally, I think it would be a mistake to have more than two Ferraris.

    With 2 Ferraris only I would have a 360 street/track car and a Vintage 12.

For your modern car, I'd take a hard look at a 456. You get that V12 torque in a car that you can take cross country. With prices falling down into the 70s on the early US cars, this would be hard to beat. Particulary if you have other Ferraris to give you that real thrill factor.

Plus, I'd question whether it makes sense to shoot for four Ferraris (and no, Jennie didn't pay me to say that). Here's what I'd go for:

    1. GT car (either a late model or an old piece of crap)

    2. Race car

    3. Car to impress titty dancers with. (Why I'd want a car to impress dancers with, I don't know. I dimly remember something about this, but it escapes me now.)

I'm kind of thinkin 3 is enough also. I would lose the BBI/328 car and go with :

    1) Modern - 360
    2) Vintage 12
    3) Race Car - 355

If you do keep a 4th, then I would vote for keeping the 328. Just seems like all your street driving needs would be fulfilled with the 360 and Vintage 12.

"...I'm getting a Mondial T for my second Ferrari..."

I have always thought that a Mondial T and a 550 Maranello would be a good set.

But four Ferrari's? Oh man, I dont have the answer.

What scale, Rob? 1:43? 1:20? HUH? Oh. You mean 1:1. In that case, rather than 4 different cars I think I'd consolidate funds and go for either a vintage racer or a 550 conv.

Yea, combine the "drive on a daily basis" and the "late model" and get a 550 or 575. The late 90's 550's are a STEAL in the very low 100's. Consider you can get that stump-pulling v12 torque and "endless acceleration" (I've never ridden in one, but that seems to be a common phrase) for the price of a nice 355 Spider or an early 360.

    Rob,

    Four? Lucky guy......

Here are the four I would choose

    1 - The 328...the perfect daily Ferrari
    2 - Keep the 355 Challenge...an awesome sound, and it's a race car!
    3 - Get a nice TR or maybe a 512TR
    4 - For a vintage car, how about a 275 GTB?

Yeah well I started to get to the "help Kevallino justify 4 Ferraris" but this ain't about me...

...Rob, read your post re: the 360 Challenge v. the 355 Challenge which is helpful as I would love a track car at some point as well. So I have gone with vintage 12/Boxer/355 Challenge/ and 456/550 - if it was me I'd have the 550 (been looking at these just the tiniest bit) on looks plus there's just two of us.

Drive the 550 mostly, race the 355C, alternatively play with the Boxer and a vintage 12 (I want a 275 GTS - 330 GTC would work in a pinch).

Nice to have this problem though!!!

    Cheers
    Kevin

    Edit - '69 or '70 Boss 302?? I still have a '70 Boss 302 in Lime Gold on "the List"...missed one for $2K in 1978...
