Well, I went ahead and bought this kit and it comes with a tap guide. Thanks. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003SESW78/ref=aag_m_pw_dp?ie=UTF8&m=A2J41G0RQ2IUXB&tag=viglink22303-20
It has been many years since I have had to do a repair like this but self tapping drain plugs were quite common at the time.Just run it in straight and you are good to go.Good luck ,Mike
Not all threaded inserts are created equal. There are many styles / variants and manufacturers --- and some of them are crappy. Whether you go with a "wound coil" type (e.g., Helicoil) or a "solid bushing" type (e.g., Time-sert), just make sure the one you pick meets either the NAS1394 or NAS1395 spec. These are the ones we fly on aircraft and spacecraft, and they have no design flaws and will perform perfectly --- so long as they are installed correctly in a proper application. Also, neither type (coil or bushing) is uniformly better than the other. It depends upon the application to dictate which is the type to use --- they each have their unique advantages. .
