i've got some DATs from a long time ago. some of them are transfers from vinyl of stuff that'll (sadly) never get released on CD. some of them are live recordings of my college band (Chenango Forks - i doubt you ever heard of us!).

i've been ripping all my music to my file server for distribution around the house. i'd like to convert these few DATs as well.

i purchased an M-Audio USB Transit device that'll take a toslink digital input. i'm running Windows XP SP2.

what i haven't quite figured out is (A) what software can i use to actually capture the stream and (B) will i capture the pure digital stream, or will windows try to do something stupid to it (ie: there's a lot of "level/volume" options seemingly in the path, which scare me a bit)?

any guidance appreciated. if i have to buy some software, so be it. though i thought this would be pretty easy: get the bitstream into the computer and dump it in redbook audio format - alas...

haven't been able to dig up anything whatsoever on google or the M-Audio site.

    tia,
    doody.

You can record it with WinAMP or Sound Recorder in Windows as a .WAV (CD) file. WinAMP probably lets you convert to various other formats too. I would imagine there is higher end software that will let you do more high level stuff too, although thats not my area of expertise.

    thanks srt.

i sorted it out. had some hardware snafus and settings set wrong. i'm capturing the first DAT now and it seems to be going well.

windows doesn't seem to be doing anything untoward to the signal (ie: futzing with the all the various level controls has no effect on the resultant waveform - right answer).

    doody!
