I am replacing valve shims to correct the gaps to within factory specs. Engine is in the car. The wedge and half-moon tools are seemingly impossible for me to use on cylinder #6 for example.

Can any one tell me about a tool like this?

    Will it work?

Getting the bucket and shim depressed can done with a screw driver; it doesn't have to have that claw shape. Keeping the bucket depressed while you remove the shim only requires a piece of steel or whatever that is a little thicker than the shim and has a sharp edge (if it's rounded at all the pressure of the tension on the bucket will kick it away). The specialty tools look cool, but it's really a pretty simple process: depress the shim (with either a screw driver or some expensive tool)*, wedge a piece of steel/ ?? to hold the bucket down while you remove the shim.
    * I actually use 2 screw drivers, one from each side, to depress the shim/ bucket, then hold them down with one screw driver while I slip a small piece of steel in to hold the edge of the bucket freeing up the shim.
    Good Luck!
