accelerating from a dead stop. Once in 2nd, I hammered the gas, shift into 3rd...didn't hear any odd noises, didn't notice any power loss, BUT I did see the white smoke pouring out the engine bay as the car began to quickly overheat.

spraying coolant all over the front side of the engine (near fire wall). Won't hold coolant. I just added a gallon to get it to a parking lot and it's just draining out.

tow truck in route. Figured I'd check with the brotherhood to get your ideas.

thoughts on what happened here??? head gasket?

    Thanks!!!

Mine did the same last year. A small hose on the front of the motor split and puked a ton of coolant out. Here is a picture of the hose that split.

If you don't have one, get a pressure tester to be sure. If you want to throw together your own, here is how I did mine.

    Pressure tester: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355-sponsored-bradan/465115-ever-wanted-pressure-test-your-coolant-system-but-could-find-adapter.html

    thanks for the quick replies!

I really hope this is it. If that hose came loose or split, then I'm sure coolant would get flung exactly where I'm seeing it. Makes sense that it's not holding coolant either.

BUT, if not the hose, what else could it be? Would a blown head gasket throw coolant on the motor where I'm seeing it? would the coolant just drain like it's doing now?

Hmm. Did you feel it with your fingers? Was it oily? How did it smell? Sweet? I've never heard of 355 breaking HG's.

Get the pressure tester, you'll know where it's coming from within a few seconds.

Okay, if you prefer a disaster scenario (perhaps you're preparing a story for the wife to explain why you are going to spend 30 gs on the car), then the oil filter came off, spewing all the oil, the back half of the motor seized up while the front half was at 9600 rpm causing the motor to split in half, thus spilling all the coolant on the ground. Better?

It's a hose. There are a half dozen possibilities. get in there with a good light and an inspection mirror. Pour in some water and watch where it comes out.

hahaha! perfect!...really, just trying to think of any possible scenarios. A faulty hose sounds too easy. I'll troubleshoot a bit tomorrow and report back.

The brownish crap looks almost like scale that was on the inside if the hose, accumulated and let free with coolant.
I'd go for a hose issue as stated, check it out.

a good preventative measure is replacing all the hoses with silicon at engine out. some are not very easily reachable.

    Hi there,

same thing here in April this year: looked like a steam boat all of a sudden, pulled in at the next parking lot and got that spraying leak spraying all over the place (see pic).

Filled her up with water, temporarily fixed the leak with a pressure bandage to keep the stuff in for the next miles and brought the spider to the dealer.

Best thing: bill said "parts 95 cents", "amount of work including refilling etc. quarter of an hour" - cheapest bill so far :)

    Cheers

I beleive the Scuderia Rampante hose kit replaces both the hoses coming from the coolant tank that Eric highlighted above..

still trying to get my head around, that 6-7 pieces of silicone hoses are priced at over $1000US..??

I had an elbow hose split, and I would loose coolant periodically. I had a hard time tracing the the leak, because I didn't realize that it was only leaking once the car was up to temperature and the t-stat was open.

The hose was $200 from ferrari. I ended up finding a similar hose at autozone for less than $10! Actually the hose had 2 bends in it, so I cut it, and had a second for back up lol.

It was a cheap fix, but I used the *correct* hose when I did my 30k service

Price all the rubber hoses from ricambi not even ferrari and get back to answering your own question. Don't forget the connections for the trans cooler.

Be forewarned here. I had a hose let go and blew my coolant all over the place much to the delight of my highway companions riding behind me.

The lack of coolant and the drive time I had to get to an exit cooked the water pump seal. Engine out time.

Similar thing happened to me, the belt tensioner blew out and chewed up the belt and the water pumped released all the coolant since it couldn't hold pressure.

That was what I considered "initiation" by my 355 into Ferrari world.

I had the same thing happen in turn 7 TWS a few years ago. Car was completely dry by the time I got back to the pits. The smoke (vapors) out the back were truly impressive in the rear view mirror.

You always replace all the hoses at the engine out time. What you replace them with is your decision.

Well, I'm having one heck of a time locating any faulty hoses. However, work has been getting in the way of play time...

I've disco's the overflow reservoir to try and get a better look. From what I can see, all hoses are intact. Going to have to take a deeper look when I get some time later today.

It has to be a hose! Even when adding coolant the other night, so I could get the car to a parking lot, the coolant was leaking out from underneath the car with the engine off...

Told ya, get that pressure tester and you'll immediately know where the leak is coming from.

This is the thing to do.

When I took delivery of my car it had coolant leak that couldn't be found by the shop who did the major. I took it to Classic Coach for their tech day and they put the pressure tester on and immediately knew that a hose was not completely on the bung on the front of the engine and the clamp wasn't clamping the bung but just squeezing the hose.

First off, thanks again for your help!..Been meaning to post an update...

Sometimes the problem is right in front of you! Don't know how I didn't see it?!? Anyway, $12 for a hose, $15 for coolant, about an hour or so of my time, and we're back in business!
