    Well,

This is a bit embarrasing. On my 80' 308 GTSi, I was removing my oil cap to add a quart and the cap slid out of my fingers. It did not come out the bottom. With a light we looked as best we could. No oil cap? A slid my hand where I could to feel around. I got on my back and tried to spot it. No luck.

Well, I don't think any of you guys can tell me where it went, but what parts can i remove to get better access? We got the air filter off. I didn't want to start it up in case it fell in the belt area.

We will continue our search tomorrow.

I want to get some jack stands. I read another F-chatter jacked his ride 24". Is that a safe height? What should I look for when purchasing Jack stands. I want to do an extensive engine detail.

Where to get red plug wires? Mine are black. I admire those engines with neatly arranged wires. I checked on ebay and say prices from $115 to $259. Are these Ferrari Spacific or can I get non Ferrari parts?

I know, find the damn oil cap first so you can go for a ride:)

    Thanks for your attention.

    Marc:)

Good luck! Reminds me of a day search I did for a bolt holding an oil pressure relief valve. Flew off at some crazy speed out of the garage!!! Or so I thought. In the end it was right under my nose and got caught by the front bumper. Damn thing! Good catch however.

But with regards to red leads, I recently bought a set from Superformance in the UK - http://www.superformance.co.uk/308/308igne.htm

Best thing is they are all the correct length, all grouped correctly with the rubber holders, and correctly labeled 1 to 8. Can't go wrong. You could probably get them cheaper seperately but seeing they are already made up with labels....

Also interested on what people say about stand heights. Recently bought a pair and they seem so damn high! Are there any tricks in getting a car onto them also?

Regarding Jack stands, what did you pay for a set? I'm checking Harbor Freight right now. I do see a set that goes up to 24". But crazy my jack only goes to 14"? Is there a way to put blocks or something under ther jack and get it the last 10+ inches?

Do I need a new jack, or should i go on a diet:)

These jack stands cost $27.99 a set and go to 24"

A magnetic probe might help looking for your "710" cap. Or a magnet on a piece of string. Drop the magnet where the oil cap went, and see if it goes the same place. I also have a long flexible claw probe for retrieving dropped parts.

Absolutely go for a jack with the proper reach. Most of the injuries I've sustained over the years have come from trying to use a tool in a way it wasn't intended to be used.

A few years back, I bit the bullet and bought a low-rise portable floor lift. $1500 delivered, but lots of uses ... especially if you have seasonal tires. (Heck, for an old fogie, lifting the car up to wax it saves tired old backs. ;))

I am glad I am not the only one to drop the filler cap, I found mine wegded in the timing belts. This was on an 84 Mon.
I had to take rear wheel off, inner panel and cam belt cover to find the little tinker

    UPDATE:

I jacked up the right rear side. Before removing the wheel and access panel, I went below. It was stuck vertically between 2 pipes. So I put everything back together, and off for a nice drive around the lake and some high seed figure eights at the University of California parking lot. :)

Remember its these simple things in life that make us smile:)

    Peace out,

    Marc
