With apologies - this is a repost from *********** - in my haste I posted on there, forgetting that so far my interaction had been with people on this forum. If this is breaking any forum etiquette, I apologize, though I'm in quite a bind right now!

A few days ago I changed the batteries in my key fobs, which I thought was sensible, but I'm wondering if it's resulted in this major issue that I have. Or perhaps it's something else entirely different.

Basically, when I tried to unlock the car (1999 456m GTA), there was no response from the alarm system. After one press of the key fob, I tired the door - at first nothing, then the alarm went off. The first few times I tried this the alarm went off only briefly, and then stopped. It was about the third time that the alarm went off for longer - I left my apartment building garage to go get the master fob, and by the time I came back, the alarm had stopped.

I used the key on the drivers door, and that opened it, but when I put the key in the ignition, there was no response from the car. I seemed to hear a clicking sound from the inside back passenger side of the car, though I'm not sure what that was.

The driver's door wouldn't close properly, and even worse, the key wouldn't come out of the ignition!

I then tried to "manually" unlock the car by using the code. I tried this three times, but nothing changed. It's certainly possible I wasn't doing the unlocking method correctly, but I did my best to use instructions posted previously by Terry.

Any help would be hugely appreciated - as of right now the car is unlocked with the key in the ignition in a semi-public garage, which is rather concerning.

    Thank you for any guidance,

    Stefan

But seriously, Stefan, this is the strangest immobilizer story I've read yet. I hope someone here can help you.

The only problem I have with my 550 is the door locks going out of sync on occasion.

Stefan- Long reply on the other site where you posted, too.

Barry- He ran the battery down with the alarm. After that, all the rest is logical for a Ferrari automatic.

Terry, it keeps you from being able to withdraw the key?

Barry- Go out to your wife's car, which I assume is an automatic. Start it, shut it down, and leave it in Drive and try and get the key out. It will not come out. Has to be in Park or, in some cars, Neutral, to get the key out. Has been that way for a long time with automatics. 6 speeds and F1s do not care.

Barry- Battery is dead. System does not know what is selected and will not release the key, just like the windows will not go down when the door is opened. 4000 lb planter right now.

I had a similar problem when I had a dead cell in a battery. Similar symptoms to yours, but my car had been in park, so it didn't hold onto the key.

If you connect a fully charged jump box, it will be just like having a charged battery. Then you should be able to reset everything and be on your way. If the battery isn't relatively new, go straight down and get a new one.

GTA's behave very strangely when the battery is too low.

    Cheers,

    George
