    Looking some help for my son. He got ahold of a Apple Imac that was not working. He replaced the logic board and all was good. Unfortunately, the previous owner is on there and we have now way of knowing his password to reset things. Is there a way to restore this computer without knowing the password? My son is 14, so he really did a lot of work to get to this point. Thanks for any help!

    Thanks for the response! We have tried one of the codes but did not get any luck trying some more. Don't know if this will help but the operating system is OS X Snow Leopard

    Smart kid if he replaced the main board & got it going - Well done.

    As Igor asked, does he have the 'boot disk'? If yes, there's easier ways. If not, here you go;

    The 'prompt' they refer to will (most likely) be a simple "#" (no quotes) followed by a blinking cursor - this is where to enter *exactly* what they say above - for example the "." In the dscl line is critical!

    Good luck!
    Cheers,
    Ian

    A good option is searching YouTube videos showing the procedure

    For many things, I totally agree.... In many cases now, I'll search YT before Google.....

    But, IMO, not when dealing with the Unix command line.

    But then I grew up with man(5) too. ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

    You will find that video is widely superior for at least 90% of the internet traffic.

    Ops, there's a kid in the room!
