    when driving the car, would like to do more often, the car runs off the battery. are there some simple checks with this car to tell if its the alternator or what?

    Got a voltmeter? Test the battery voltage with the car off. Should be 12.something volts up to about 13.2. Start the car and rev it over 3000 for a second to get the alternator excited. Now measure the battery again. If the alternator works it should be higher, probably 13-something or maybe even very low 14-something volts.

    (In a pinch you can use the headlights instead of a voltmeter.)

    Does the red G light in the dash come on before the engine starts? Does it go off when running?
