My wife and I are going on a cruise in May (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers Masters of Zin program, with Oceania). It is our first cruise ever, and we are taking my parents (their first as well). I am trying to figure out what to do at several of the ports of call, and I am looking for advice. At some ports there are cruise organized excursions that sound good, at others my wife and I are going to do our own thing (and we are comfortable figuring it out). Been to Maranello, done the tour, so won't try to do dash in from the coast to do that.

Ports in question: Corfu (Greece), Sorrento/Capri (Italy), Bonifacio (Corsica, France), Portifino (Italy), Monte Carlo, Provence (Marseille, France).

I'm looking for restaraunt suggestions, quick trips, names of guides, etc. I am comfortable driving, taking public transportation, etc. Cost is always a consideration, but not a huge one in this case.

I would also welcome any hints/suggestions on doing things from where the ship docks (I like the independence of not being tied to the cruise's excursions).

    Thanks!

Try this site, I found it useful when I did an Alaska cruise last year. I would love to do a Med cruise sometime.

Just returned from a Mediterrannian cruise last month. Get tour info for each city on your ship at the travel/tour desk before port of call on bring books along. I took my elderly parents as well and was the only one on board who did so. If they are elderly as well you may wish to either rent a car at the dock, or make arrangements prior from the ships Concierge. Another way is to rent a Taxi for a day but you are reliant on a person who may not be conversant in English or knowledgeble of the sites. You will see these drivers when the ship docks; Negotiate with the promise of a good tip if you are pleased. My best Experiances were with a good Taxi although we rented cars as well. You will get the best deal on rentals if you walk or shuttle into town, drive back to the ship to pick up the rest of the party. Or if you get a good Concierge that will negotiate for you, he can arrange port pick up and drop off of the car. Only rent if you know exactly what you want to see and it is simply getting there or if you just wish to drive around. Some European cities are mazes.

Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (called ZAP) is a northern California non-profit (which makes me laugh) organization that promotes Zinfandel (the wine), sponsors events, etc. It also has elements of a trade organization for growers of the Zin grape, as well as vitners of the wine.

The Masters of Zin program is an in-depth educational program teaching all about Zinfandel wine.

    Oceania is the cruise line.

All of this was just listed as background.
