Help with OBDII Port

    So I bought a V1, along with the Savvy attachment for it. For those that don't know, the Savvy is a little plug that goes into your OBDII port to read the vehicle speed, so that your detector will auto-mute below a selected speed. As a bonus, it also POWERS the detector, so it's a very nice hardwire solution.

    Anyway, My V1 continually cuts power and re-powers. Very counter-productive as well as annoying. I crawled underneath to take a look and was kind of surprised with what I saw. There's only a few wires actually connecting the OBDII part to the car (understandable, since OBDII was new in this period). But also, one of the pins is just wired to one of the other pins with a simple wire splice connector. This pin is also loose. I've connected the V1, and then pushed that pin into place tightly, and it appears to solve the problem for a while, but then the problem reappears. It's like the pin works itself loose and that's causing my intermittent power problem.

    Questions for the knowledge base here:

    1. I remember reading somewhere that there was a 'fix' a lot of these cars had done to bring their OBDII port into spec. Is this that fix? If not, any ideas wtf this is?

    2. Any ideas on how to fasten this pin in here more securely? I'm sure it would be easy if I took the dash apart, but it's pretty cramped laying under there with not enough elbow room to work effectively. Soldering 8" directly above my face is out of the question. :D

    That is the "fix" to make the OBDII compliant. It just spliced two grounds together just as it appears and was done as a recall.

    I just went through some troubleshooting on my OBD port and if you search my posts you'll see some photos . etc. that might help you out.

    Replacing those female pins in the connector would be a tough job and there is hardly any slack in that bundle or hand room either.

    Right, the lack of slack and room make working up there almost impossible.

    Basically, when nothing is plugged in, that extra connector is sort of loose and can be pushed in and out (Not sure how far 'out' - I'm too scared to pull all the way).

    When the connector is plugged into the V1 though, then that pin has a bit more resistance going in and can be shoved in with some force using a small, flat bladed screwdriver. It really feels like this will hold it, but it doesn't. I may find some non-permanent solution like jamming a toothpick in behind to add some resistance...
