I also posted this on the general Ferrari section and thought I'd post in the F12 specific section as well. So I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a beautiful CPO F12. Car is amazing, but there was minor damage to the paint that occurred during transport. It was well documented via photos, video and the bill of lading that there was no damage to the car upon pickup, however on delivery to me, I found an area of the lower front fender that had some paint rubbed off. The area is small and not very noticeable but I know its there. The only thing I can think of is possibly one of the shipping straps rubbed against the body during the transportation and over the thousands of miles travelled the damage was slowly done. The transport company has stepped up and promised to take care of everything to "make sure I'm happy". At this point I'm looking for advice on how to proceed.

More than likely the transport company will want to use their insurance to cover the repair but I wanted to avoid going this route because I don't want the repair of what is essentially a scuff mark to create a blemish on the vehicle's carfax report.

I could get estimates on a repair from a Ferrari body shop and just have the transportation company pay for it. The dealership is recommending I go this route and get an estimate on what it would cost to get it touched up. I'm a little disappointed with the dealership because it seems that they went cheap with the transportation company they used for my car, and I can't help but to think that if they used one of the larger more popular companies, this may not have happened.

With either of these routes, I'd need to consider the impact of a respray or repair on the value of my car if or when it comes time to trade it in or sell it.

Anyone with advice on how to proceed next?

    Thanks

PS other than this small issue, I'm loving this car!

What color paint do you have? If it’s triple layer that may be a bigger headache....my wife’s ff is and the a couple of door dings have proven to be a pain. If not, it’s probably a pretty simple fix given it’s the bumper. Not sure if paint claims impact car fax but others far more knowledgeable on this forum will know. I hope it’s a simple fix since all you should be feeling is complete excitement over a new brilliant car. Hope u can enjoy!

    Thank you!
It's not triple layer paint. Bianco Avus. Hopefully not hard to repair.

Bianco is probably one of the colors where respray can work. As an example in the case of my F12 Grigio Ferro color I know another car the same color where a section it was resprayed and at certain light angles you can tell there is a slight color difference. According with the opinion of a professional I heard there are colors which are virtually impossible to match exactly and you get always a difference and if one wants perfection in such cases the only solution is to paint the all car.

I would not lay too much blame on the dealership as odd as that sounds. Folks on this board have posted transport damage from the smallest to the largest carriers. Shipping your car does increase the likelihood of damage no matter how you look at it. As far as paint, its a tossup I would assume. I'm not sure if your more worried about paint not matching or devaluation on some report somewhere. It has been reported here that a surprising percentage of brand new cars have some form of paint repair either at the factory or in transport. The difference is its not documented. Suggest at least getting an estimate and interviewing potential shops and go from there. I would not be happy about the damage if I were you but don't let it impact you too deeply that it will sour your success at owning one of the finest and most enjoyable rides ever produced. Good luck.

I bought my FF is Las Vegas and had it shipped to my home in Virginia. The transporter scratched the roof of the car - through the paint to the primer. Of course the transport company wanted me to allow them to ‘take care of it’. I called my insurance company (USAA) and they recommended I not do that - too risky, even though it would end up showing up on a carfax. I had USAA sue the transport company to cover the repairs, which were handled expertly by one of the few authorized Ferrari body repair shops in the USA (Karosserie in Wayne, PA). I couldn’t be happier that I had the work done right and that I ended up with paint that was as good as, if not better than, when it left the factory. I have photos of the minor scratches along with in-process repairs by Karosserie - photos that show that the repairs were done properly. I imagine it may affect the resale value a small bit, but I don’t care. Better to have to done right (mine was more than a $15,000 repair) than to have someone do it on the cheap. BTW, to do the job right, Karosserie took the glass out, replaced the windshield (which cracked), all window gaskets, dismantled the interior and trunk and repainted about 1/2 the car. Took about 3 weeks, lots of labor and is a perfect match which is undetectable. So glad I didn’t go along with the transporter’s suggestion that the area could be ‘blended’ for a couple of hundred dollars. Mine had a $407k sticker - I wasn’t going to skimp on fixing it properly.

Thanks for the advice, and you're definitely right. I need to focus more on the big picture. Despite the minor hiccup, I feel fortunate to be the owner of an amazing car. The reason I'm placing some of the blame on the dealership is because based on how the car was shipped, it's obvious they didn't supervise the loading and securing of the car onto the transporter to make sure the damage wouldn't happen. They've said as much in their communication with me. I've had many cars shipped before and this is the first time I've seen one secured for shipping in the same way mine was. Maybe I'm trusting the dealership too much with making sure things go smoothly with a transaction like this, but when I've shipped my sold cars to others, I've supervised and documented the loading for my records and also for the benefit of the buyer.

Thanks for sharing. This is the route I will go. Karosserie is the closest authorized Ferrari shop to me. Its minor paintwork, but I want to make sure its done right and Karosserie seems to be highly recommended here.

M3doc, I dealt with Jamie Cummings at Karosserie. I think he is one of the owners. He was great at making sure insurance covered everything it could possibly cover including transport to and from my home in Virginia. I made a trip up to their shop mid-repair to see the progress and got a great tour of the exotics in their care. Jamie sent frequent photos and i always felt like my baby was in the best care. Good luck with your car!
