Fairly new here, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I've actually been looking at other models, but a 1977 308 GTB has been presented to me, and I'm not sure where the value is on these. This is a mostly original example with the wheels being updated to 16's, a repaint at some point, and a recent true major service including the Webers being rebuilt and engine bay refresh. Everything is there, and most of the service history. Red over black with 50k miles. The car presents well inside and out. I realize pics would help, but unfortunately I can't share them at this time. Let's call it a 7/10 overall. Thanks for the help Jake
GTBs are worth more than a GTS. Drive the car and check the oil pressure as you drive. If you don't have good pressure on the gauge either you have a bad gauge, sending unit, or the big one: you need to tear the engine down. Check it the wheels are QV 16s, 328s, or in my case they were '78 Speedlines which were a dealer option. If they are not they are knock off repos. Check for overheating when you drive it. Check the 2nd gear synchro when the engine is warm, do not attempt 2nd gear with a cold engine go 1 directly to 3. Stand behind the car with the engine running and put your hand in front of each exhaust tube to make sure equal exhaust is coming from all four tubes. Flip the front headlights to make sure the motors and lamps are working. Check directionals. Check the clutch modulation, if it's really hard to press to floor the mechanism needs to be reworked. The clutch should be relatively firm but not ridiculous. Check under the car for cracks in the front lower valance, very common. The window motors will be ridiculously slow. Check the AC and blower. The engine should rev very freely with an idle at about 800 when at temperature. Without pictures it's hard to say what it's worth.
If he sits in an injected car then sits in this one and pushes the clutch, he is going to think something is broken.
Thanks guys, pics at the link in post 5. I have a 996tt with GT2 clutch conversion and a 78 930, so I assume the clutch feel is similar to the latter.
This might help: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/official-308-gtb-gts-market-thread.479301/page-107
Pretty sure that those are the 16" KN reproduction wheels (not stock F 16") so not such a huge thing. Also, no air injection - so wouldn't technically say "it's all there" (but most US 308 are now that way).
Looks like a very nice car. Really lame mirrors balance out the rear valence which has been done nicely. Interior patina is nice and matches the miles. Engine bay is super clean and original hose clamps and other details, excepting the usual loss of emissions junk, says this car was well cared for. All serviced up, I’d say $80-90K if no outstanding issues. If it were an unusual and cool color, might be $10K more. The fake Campy wheels are fine if you take the stickers off.
Look nice but many of the age-related issues might be lurking unless records show otherwise (hoses to the front, diff seals, 2nd synchro, sodium valves and soft guides, suspension bushes etc.) Without those worries I would think $80-90k, if those issues are lurking then $70-80.
Thanks for all of the feedback guys, much appreciated. Like I said, I'm not up to speed on my research on the 308's, so this is very helpful. Here is the comments from the seller. This car was originally priced at $85k, but it's been offered to me at a significant discount so I'm trying to make an educated decision. I'd be happy to drive it a few years and break even. At the end of February 2017, this car went through an extensive major service, that included all belts, hoses, wires, clamps, gaskets along with a host of other misc. items to bring its mechanical level up to an extremely high standard. All 4 carburetors were rebuilt and set in synch at this time as well. A compression test was performed also, with all cylinder numbers reading nicely between 154 and 158 (see service receipt from major). All major engine components have been refinished to the correct standard to give the engine bay a very fresh look to go along with its new mechanicals. Please see the photos attached of the engine work being performed and the service receipt that accompanies it. This example is believed to be a 3-owner car, with some ownership receipts dating back to 1984. It comes with its original Schedoni Owners Pouch and 1977 308 Owner’s Manual, complete jack kit with spare light bulb holder, compete tool kit, emergency light with pouch and binder with service receipts. As you can see by the photos, the car shows extremely well and has been looked after and cared for. The paint is in excellent overall condition and I would rate it an 8. It was clearly repainted in the original color several years ago. There are a few small chips that have been touched up, but they are minor and the paint shows well. In addition, there is absolutely no rust on the vehicle and all the body panels are straight. The wheels, which have been upgraded to the factory 16” wheels (in place of the factory 14” wheels), have been refinished and shod with brand new BF Goodrich G- Force Sport Comp TA. As an all original interior, as the pictures show, it has a very nice patina and shows very little wear on any of the leather or components which still look crisp and clean. Everything works as it should and feels like it was intended to. Other than a set of new speakers in the factory openings and a new set of floor mats, everything else is original.
This car looks very good to me. The wheels are correct with original inserts (which I hate), the mirrors are wrong. The books and pouch are worth 2K by themselves. Honestly, judging by what I just got for my 308, 75K would be in line.
Thanks for all of the help guys. For reference it was offered to me, and just sold for $65k. I was going to look next week, but to be honest this wasn't my first choice, so while it was a good deal, I'm not too disappointed.
It looks to me like someone got a screaming deal. Unless there was something that wasn't revealed in the pictures.
Barring any hidden surprises, even with 10K needed to address any additional stuff not seen, 65K would seem to be a great deal for a non-cat GTB looking that good. That was way better bought than sold.
I'll let you guys know as I purchased the vehicle. I'm very excited to be back in a gated Ferrari having previously owned a 97 F355. Hope the 308 will make a perfect stablemate to also new to me 360 CS. In speaking with Mike from Yellow Compass and the owner of the vehicle it appears that at the moment it does not need any issues addressed. It has had a major with a well respected Ferrari master mechanic (all documented with pictures & reports) and they will look it over again before shipping which was included in the price and also new set of Lloyd black mats which I thought was very generous. Mike has been fantastic to work with and I feel goes really out of his way to address questions, concerns etc. The deal itself was very smooth and seamless.
