I have a 1988 1/2 Mondial 3.2 which is a daily driver. Last week the car sat out in a heavy rain (but it wasn't driven in the rain or through standing water), and it has run poorly ever since. It starts, runs rough, smells like unburned fuel, and backfires when shut off.
I have undone both coil wires and coil pin connections and sprayed STP Wire Dryer on them, & I did the same with the ECU and its connections. Note that none of these wires appeared to be wet at all. I also checked the air cleaner, and it was dry.
The car still runs poorly. Any ideas?

Check inside both the dist. cap for moisture, if moisture is visible dry it or spray WD-40 or STP Dryer.

Make sure there is no standing water down in your spark plug holes. Water likes to sit down in there and the car will run poorly until it evaporates.

Both Mike and Jim are on the right track. Please be mindful that WD40 burns really nicely. Its how I blew up my shop vac. :p

David, check the right rear trunk area just under where the aerial is - there is fused relay in there (you'll see it bolted to the underside of the compartment bottom along with other electronics) that can get wet and fail. If the fuse is blown or the relay has failed the car will run, but will run poorly, similar to your description. There's a drain for the aerial which is supposed to evacuate out a hole in the bottom of this area of the trunk but if that drain is plugged or not evacuating out the hole then water/moisture will accumulate here and give the electronics trouble. Good luck!
