Recently had a new clutch in my 1998 355 F1, car has been driving fine for a 100 miles or so but seems to have developed a problem......

Car starts OK, all check lights go out, if I drive down the street
the speedo doesn't register and the car won't let me go any higher
than 2nd gear, after a few hundred meters the gearbox fault light comes on.

    Any help appreciated guys.

This could be a problem with the Electronic Actuator. If it is not level it could cause this to happen. To level it, you need to be underneath with the Left side rear protection panel removed. The actuator is has 5 hydraulic connections. It is not the one with the plastic dome on top. If is the front unit. If it is out of true you should be able to see and level it at the bracket..

The actuator is shown below. If you don't have experience working on this system, I'd suggest taking it to somebody that does. Trial-and-error, or just figuring-it-out-along-the-way might work on some vehicle subsystems. On a 355F1, I personally wouldn't take any chances.

It can get very expensive, very quickly.

Check your wiring to your speedometer sending unit (speedo sensor). It may even be a faulty speedo sensor itself.

It does not need to be level, it needs to be correctly adjusted and that is only done with a computer and a number of very specialized fixtures. If he has just had a clutch replaced there is no reason to think this unit is out of adjustment and you might very well be advising him to make matters very much worse.

I would suggest that your lack of knowledge is far outpacing your desire to help.

In other words........you fill in the blank.

    Thanks guys...........

Keep the suggestions coming I heard the Sun is going to be out this weekend
(rare occasion in the UK ;-) )

I guess this fault must be listed in the workshop manuals somewhere
as the car must be conciously making a decision not let me go
above 2nd gear........ anyone seen this is in the workshop manual ?

Take it back to whoever did the clutch, let them check it out--if that is an option for you...

FYI you can drive the car like that perfectly fine.

Do 1st to 2nd normal, take 2nd to about 6,000 rpm, put it in N and then downshift and it will select 6th gear. You can then downshift to 5th, 4th, and 3rd but you cannot upshift. You can get fast enough to where if you tap it, you can see it go straight from 2-4 on the LED without even seeing 5th or 6th.

I drove around like that for 1,500 miles lol when my speedometer quit working because of a damn fuse.

i understand that rarely does the hydralic actuator actually leak its one of the many hose connecting running to it....
