The mileage in ANY car can be rolled back, and the ECU in ANY car can be re flashed to what ever mileage you would like it to be.
Unfortunately its done more often then you think.

Just because the car has a digital odo, doesn't mean its safe from fraud. In fact..it easier to roll a digital unit then the old style geared units.

Believe it or not there are people out there who make a good living designing and selling software to car dealers that reprogram dashes and ecus. And it some cases it can be done right through the OBD11 connector under the dash.

The exotic car market is full of these types of dealers and private sellers. How many 308, TR's, etc have you seen with the "magic" 43,000 mile odo reading? How may late model Ferrari's are already at this number??

Be very aware of fake mileage in the newer cars!! They get rolled back just like in the days of old. Hate to say it, but keep an eye on the dealers for this as well.

You misunderstand, Stormy. I don't condone anyone's actions. I simply think that anonymous accusations are cowardly. If you're sure of your statements, then go get the proper authorities involved. All you're doing here is slandering someone else whilst hiding behind the curtain.

I agree, if your going to drop a bomb like this, Storm, you should not do it anonymously. As far as this explanation goes, it is ridiculous! Calibrating the odometers for tire and wheel size is one thing, but rolling back the odometers does not serve any purpose but to add extra $$$ in the sellers pockets. "It is the responsibility of the owner of the vehicle to disclose..." I think the other guy said it best about the bongs being for tobacco use. Just like those little clear baggies that they sell in gas stations. They aren't really for packaging drugs, they are for storing jewelry and coins as they are advertised. The odometer business may be legal, but ethical it is not!

This story would read a lot easier, if the OP would make mention of a case number.

Without that it is just blowing hot air.

Think about it: If actions like these could be made hard, FNA and SpA would be on it like crows on a shiny dime, and the feds would be knocking at the door.
Service records and books would be seized, and the odo-guy would be implemented on the back of that.

The Deep Throat method is nice, and may be effective, but the audience chosen is wrong.

Ed, you don't hide when you post, neither do I. Everyone here knows who you are, me too. This guy comes on, hides his identity, and goes into full attack mode. The owners of the dealership may not want to get into the fray on this one, with said same anon. guy, would you? His credibility is strained already, why engage?

Reading comprehension not one of your skills there F1???

At no time did I defend anyone's actions, including yours. Easy as pie to come on here posting through an anonymous website, with no name, address, etc., complaining about some perceived fraud. All I said was:

your credibility is strained when you post this way. Come on here looking to attack a guy (Don't care what he does, as in this case of odometer "tweaking") while hiding behind internet anonymity doesn't help your case.

Didn't support the act of cracking and diddling an odometer, but also don't condone anonymous attacks. Your target is here for all to see, but you can hide. And again, the use of an internet anonymizer, once again further disguising your ID, doesn't do much for ya either.

Take it any way you like.

Only The Great Oz hides behind a curtain, the rest hide behind lawyers and politicians. Hell women have been rolling back their odometers for thousands of years. Many had over the magic 43,000 miles on them before they got married. LOL.

    Anyone heard of this company?

www.ppibymail.com. Supposedly you send them $1,000 and they do a virtual PPI. Evidently it's all legit, as long as you don't use their report for "personal gain" purposes...

Their sister company: www.servicerecordsbymail.com is great if you need records to back up your virtual PPI.

That actually sounds like they robbed the guy twice!!!

I would like to add to the anonymity thing.... Anonymity is a mutants best friend... (Good line from X-men)

But seriously, anonymity is the key to exposing a fraudulent situation... Many a small fry would be crushed by the big guys if not for anonymity... Many of the whistleblowers would be killed, hence the witness protection programs...
My problem is anonymity allows for bull**** accusations to take place and people with vendettas could easily manipulate a system for there own personal gain....

As for F-1, who knows what his intentions are... Maybe he got burned or is just being overly protective of us or maybe he has a competing business... Either way, If you present the case without all the histrionics then no need to worry about retaliation....

It dos make me think twice about some of these low mileage 430s out there.... Although I don't know whats worse, a guy who bought a 430 to flip and now can't (Thus robbing a real enthusiast) or a guy who put 11k miles on his Fcar and rolled it back to 2k... No one would doubt the mileage and the car would still look pristine with a good detail...

sadly, i think you have way too much confidence in our judicial system. Specially if the "victim" has been paid off. I'm sure the authorities in new york have a stack of auto allegations ten feet tall they aren't doing a thing about. Have you ever tried to report a minor crime like this to the feds? they don't even have time to go after bernie madoff when the case is laid on their desk.

I think he chose the perfect audience. Where should he post it, the supra forum?

Maybe I have too much confidence in the feds, and if the crime goes unpunished, it was worth doing (apart from the moral aspects)
My point is, that if there is a crime, it should be reported and a case opened, at least, to lend some credibility to the allegations. If not, it's just hot air.
Once a case has been opened, the audience should be FNA and SpA (in case the seller is an authorised F-car dealer)

Shouting allegations without properly backing them up with facts and/or a case number in a public forum is questionable at best. Who is to say that the OP doesn't have alterior motives?
