Well Everyone in the 348 brotherhood (and Bullfighter),

I have handed over my new baby to Gary Bobileff for a major service. Couldn't be in better hands as far as I am concerned. Will keep you all up to date on the work being done, and if possible like Bull did, I will get some pics when the beast is out of the back of her.

Waivered, but requested he put in Synthetics in the tranny and motor (Red Line and Mobil One respectively on the recommendation of VVassallo) and Gary has two 308's and a 355 ongoing right now so it may be a few days before the bolts start to be turned on my 348SS#63. Lucky for them - LOL!

Will keep everyone appraised of the status.

Well, the first reason I would have moved out here before I bought my Ferrari would have been for the weather in San Diego, but now that I have one, I want to turn my car over to the stooges for about three months and watch them perform some magic! LOL

Plugzit, I am out here on active duty and bought my 348 while I was out here. I leave at the end of the month and head back to the Mid Atlantic Region where I anticipate working with "Psycho Clown" Picture 285Ferrari to clean up the sticky parts on my console :)

I will miss Vince V and Bullfighter, and even 3forty8, but I won't miss VV busting my arse about not having Goth make my car into the MACH 5 - LMAO!!!

There is still time, Matt. :) If you car gets out of Bobileff's soon enough, we can swap out that Tubi for a complete goth muff system and your net cost would be minimal with a huge performance gain. Of course, goth's schedule is booking up so you'd have to get on the calendar soon. :) Of course, he always has other projects come up as well - reorganizing his tool chest, installing HDTV in the shop, chasing shirts at the local watering hole, you know, the usual bachelor pursuits. :D

Final comments on the synthetics. You definitely will feel the difference in the 1-2 cold shifting. As for engine oil, I look at it this way; your engine will spend a lot fo time either sitting or at the upper end of the rev range. Most internal engine wear occurs on the start-up and synthetics do a better job of coating internals than organics. If you are driving regularly, this might not be so much of an issue, but for an exotic that spends a lot of time between outings, I want syns to minimize wear on infrequent start-ups. As for driving at the ends of the rev range, it should be obvious that syns last longer at extremes than organincs.

Agree on the motor oil - have to trust you on the Red Line Syn for shifting. I am a huge proponent of Syns anyway, and who am I to question a STOOGE anyway???

Will let you know how it is going soon. I think he'll start turning wrenches on it next week with his guys.

I love the sound of Goth's pipes on your car, but when I get back to DC and have a problem with a Tubi, everyone has seen them. When I have a problem with a Goth Special, people will look at it and say, what the he^^ is that? :)

I prefer skirts myself, but to each their own! :D

I wouldn't have believed the Red Line gear oil could make such a big difference until I tried it for myself - massive improvement for cold shifts into 2nd and shifting in general is smoother in all gears.

I was warned that switching to synthetic motor oil could result in oil leaks (seals not designed for synthetic), but I have been running Royal Purple synthetic for about six months with no issues.

Gary told me there have been occassions where leaks have occurred after switching to Synthetics, but I guess we will have to see. I am not an engineer, but I have read enough about synthetics to know that they truly are an advance over the previous standard oils. That is great but if I have an oil fire in my engine compartment because it is leaking all over the place, I guess it will be a bad move, but Gary doesn't seem to think THAT will happen.

Good to hear that yours is ok 3Forty8 after putting in Purple. I am going with Mobil One, so will see what happens.

For the experts - If leaks to occur, where would I likely see them (or at leaset where should I look for them?)

For the gear shifting, it isn't horrible now, but 2nd gear is a crap shoot while cold. If it makes it that much better it will be awesome.

Lastly, I prefer skirts too, but that is just my personal preference ;-)

    {FROM Exxon Mobil Site}
Myth: Mobil 1 will leak out of the seals of older cars.
Reality:Mobil 1 does not cause leaks. In fact, new Mobil 1 was tested in dozens of industry standard and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) tests to prove its seal performance. It is fully compatible with the elastomeric materials from which all automotive seals and gaskets are made. If an older engine is in good condition and does not have oil leaks, Mobil 1 provides the same advantages as when used in a new engine. ExxonMobil recommends taking measures to repair the leaks, then using Mobil 1. ExxonMobil also recommends following the automobile manufacturer's manual for the proper oil to use.

+1 on the Redline tranny oil. HUGE improvement - like a different car - for cold shifts. Good call!

Mid-day. I will get up there in the next few days and get a few pics. To all asking who to take your car to for a major, I have to admit I don't know everyone around here, but I feel VERY comfortable with the Speciale in his capable hands.

Pictures to follow this evening hopefully, but I am amazed that this car is in so may pieces and will be ready by Thursday of this week. They are waiting on the Hill Engineering Bearings & Tensioners and a few other odds and ends, but Eric is working on my car right now and it is getting everything it needs.

Yes, Vince, Redline Synthetic in the gearbox. I am going with Mobil One Synthetic in the motor - will let everyone know how that works out. Thought about a number of other upgrades, but will just get the car full up round and then work on taking it up to another level. It looks kind of strange all torn apart. Reminds me of a 747 sitting on the ground. That thing should just be in the air, and my Ferrari should be in one piece and ready to drive!

I spoke with Gary for about 20 minutes about my car and some others (He has some Shweet Lambo 400's there right now) and I think that he should run for Ferrari Mechanic of the year.

Going to have him hard wire a battery tender in the rear of the car too in order to make the winter hibernation a little easier for me and for the car...

    Pictures to follow this evening.

Great to hear its coming along nicely Matt. Looking forward to pics. :):)

You wont believe how smooth your shifts will be with Redline gearbox oil. ;);)

I use Mobil 1 Super Synthetic 5W 50 in the engine. So far so good using that engine oil. :):)

Just a quick note on the Synthetic oil leaking. I ignored the same advice and went with synthetic in my Esprit and yes it did start leaking. It sucks but a reseal and its fixed and you get to keep the synthetic woohoo.

Have also heard of that before. :):)

So far, no seals are leaking on my 348. :p:p

It actually had Shell Helix Ultra Synthetic oil before I switched to Mobil 1. I didnt have any leaks before, so I didnt expect any after the oil change. :):)

Here we go boys. Photos in no particular order. All it is going well. Eric is the lead mechanic and said he has made some minor adjustments to the valves and asked me how I drove my car, because he could adjust the cams to give me more top end if he wanted me to.

I said I prefer midrange torque and grunt and he said he would leave the cams in thier present settings then. I learned so much speaking with he and Gary today it was incredible. VV, I got to see that crossover butterfly valve in the motor that opens under vacuum to create the cool arse sound when we are on full throttle.

Guess I am taking my chances with the synthetic, but with new gaskets during the major we should be ok (knock loud on wood). It is supposed to be done either Thursday or Friday - They are waiting on the Hill Tensioners and bearings to arrive. I am also having him hard-wire in a batter tender hookup.

I saw so many things it is hard to get them all in an email here, but I will add one tomorrow to this thread after I sleep on it.

I will say that I agree with the redline in the tranny, but I tried the synth in the engine of a 308 ... and I had leaks all around the cam seals. I switched back ... and the leaks stopped. Maybe the 348/355 are different, however I currently have leaks around my cam seals (348) and the previous owner used synth ... after my service, I may experiment again.

The 348 and 355 comes with synthetic in the motor, from the factory. My experience over the years is while the sny will not cause a leak, it will make a small weep, larger.

See you guys on the streets as of Monday at noon next week. Going to head over to 3forty8's place for a pint and some Ferrari Chat and hopefully a fun run before I head back East. Anyone who wants to get together next week to drive or do whatever - I plan on going to the NAS North Island Ferrari Corral next SAT if the car doesn't go back on Friday -still TBD.

The car is sick nice. Gary Bobileff and team did a great job. The shift into second is already better due to the synthetic Red Line (thanks Vince) and it just pulls so freaking smoothly and it is so tight.

It now has Hill Tensioners/Bearings and synthetic oil throughout! Can't wait to get it back East and show all my friends!!! I went up to pay Gary and took it out for a spin, and it was GREAT!

I am heading back to see my wife and daughter in DC this weekend, so see you guys for my last week on the Left Coast next week.

Bullfighter, you up for another meal closer to San Diego sometime next week? VV?
