Jason - Like many on here I am fortunate enough to fall into the category of "having everything" (all things relative, I have what matters: health, family, and means...although I do not have an F car, yet!) and tell my family to not get any holiday gifts for me and spending time with them is gift enough.

I woke up early this AM with fam still asleep and picked up the iPad to read newspapers feeling truly blessed and at peace. I started scanning F chat and only tapped on this thread as there were few new posts / traffic on other threads and I wondered why this "pic of a pulled 612 moto" kept appearing at the top of the forum.

Two hours later I feel like Santa is real (his name is Jason) and finding this thread is my gift! I am truly in awe of your knowledge, commitment and passion to this project. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with all of us. I wish you all the best in bringing it to completion and will be following to the end.

Also, much respect for sharing your honest insights and thought process as you work thru the few challenges you have faced. You clearly have extremely high emotional intelligence in addition to your engineering prowess. Please keep sharing and continue to ignore the ignorant few who post on here.

    Cheers!

PS - once you finish if you ever have the car up in Chicago please let us know as I am sure there are many of us that would love to meet you and check out this beauty.

Thank you for your encouragement! There is a very good chance the car will be living in Chicago when it is completed so you will definitely be able to check it out. What part of town are you in? My new job is in the loop and we will likely be relocating to Chicago in the next year or two.

GREAT THREAD!! This is a journey and it epitomizes the saying "nothing ventured, nothing gained." Sorry for the pitfalls but you will obviously overcome them. Looking forward to reading what the New Year brings for this project.

It is very likely something so damn simple that you just cannot see it :).

I though cannot understand what is going on here. You cannot have bent the valves again because minus the cams she passes the leak down test. You install the cams and then you have a leak issue ... hmmm??

Is the leak issue on the same cylinder that suffered the hydraulic'ing? I'm thinking cam followers are your issue and it was not only the conrod that suffered from that experience but also one or more cam followers.

Have you tried for the sake of testing swapping the cam followers on the cylinders that leaks to another cylinder to see if the leak moves also?

    OK, a good news update!

After messing around chronically with leakdown tests and over-thinking everything since making that bent valve mistake, I finally discerned that the primary leakdown deltas are not valve related but a function of having rings that need to be worn in to the honed cylinders, etc.

So, I rechecked all leakdowns on all cylinders (both banks). The results were all over the place this time with little to no leakage past the valves. And all valves (intake ones that I was able to fill with brake clean) held the fluid at TDC.

So I decided to press on, install valve covers, seal things up and do compression check.

Voila! 210 PSI on the cylinder that I had bent the valves on previously. That puts all my compression readings (despite still breaking in the motor) at 190 PSI or more.

I believe I now have a "good engine" that is ready to run. Over the next couple days I will put on the exhaust manifolds and get the upper plenum installed and everything ready to run (minus the rest of the exhaust system). I hope to do a test start prior to the 5th of Jan.

    Stay tuned!

Very impressed with your capabilities but more so with your attitude.

I suspect 2015 will be a fun and rewarding year for you both Ferrari wise and generally.

    Thanks guys!

After getting her running (well), I plan to run it for 30 minutes and then change oil and filters. Then run again and then install exhaust and put the rest of the bits back on the car. I have the front bumper to put back on, AC to charge and rear radar detector to mount. Then I have to get the new windshield put in, the exterior cleaned up by a touch-up specialist, then start enjoying!

I am traveling all week long now-a-days so I plan to finish up the details over the next 6 - 8 weeks and have her ready for plates and fun my mid-March.

    Keeping my fingers crossed!

Will post more pics as applicable. For now it's just been more of the same engine rebuild pics so nothing too interesting...

I just read this whole thread. Thanks for taking the time to share this awesome project, and I can't wait to see the car back together. Good luck with the rest of the assembly!

Oh, and what happened to the windshield? I heard you mention it during the restart video, but I didn't catch what the problem was.

On the windshield question... I broke it! The mirror attachment plug (metal thing that holds it on the windshield) was off when I bought the car (due to Florida heat I believe). I called the ferrari dealer to try to get a new slug (with the special thin epoxy like double sided tape like thing) to re-attach. They couldn't help me. So I used the old school glue to re-attach it. DON"T EVER DO THIS! I finally reattached the mirror and then hit it with my head when working on the dash and interior. The mirror broke off the windshield, took a piece of glass with it upon detachment, and send an 18" crack across! I then promptly filled my pants. The good news is I have $0 comp on my insurance and the new $4k windshield will be fully covered. Phew!

As far as progress today, I spent a little time on it. The engine is fully prepped minus the upper (red) intake plenum. I've got 3 friend meeting me at 10am to lower that puppy on the motor. It will hopefully then be just a couple of hours of work to finish up the intake system, fill coolant, etc and then likely attempt to start it on Sunday sometime.

Everything all buttoned up on top. 100%.

Tomorrow I route the two downstream oxygen sensor wires on the passenger headers, install the starter motor heat shield, finish bleeding/filling the cooling system and jump in and turn the key.

Keep my 612 in your prayers tonight! ;-)
