    Hey Marc,

I have no sound! How can I fix that?
The sound is probably the best part! :)

Really? Absolutely no problem here (using Windows Media Player 10 on Windows 2003 Server).

Hmmmm - a common effect of not having recent codecs is this missing sound - could be Mark is using a newer codec (codec roughly means 'method for preparing movie for web' for the uninitiated).

When did you last update your version of windows media player (assume you're on XP)?

The latest version on Windows XP is 11, version 10 on other Win OSs and the update includes updates in how media in played - in the codecs. You may need to update codecs manually or a different way if you're on another platform.

Try that and let us know how it goes...

Yes, I receive a message that it is not the right codec. Let me look into it.
Can't I download the file to my computer and play it on another program? I am a Mac user remember? I am not used to all these difficult codec related microsoft problems! ha ha.

Hmm, just saw that the file has a 1 kb size. Seems to be a bit small for a movie...

    Corrupt file!

No, because I can see the movie but hear no sound.
Can I make VLC the player of choice when I click on a videostream?

Oh, it's streaming data... I don't think that VLC can go with streaming data, especially when it's a WMV file.

    Erh... Quicktime perhaps?

Yep - I'm an OSX and a UNIX user myself also ( - simultaneously most of the time, hehe ).

Doesn't help Hedge keeps putting spaces in his filenames which some OSs still don't really like - try the formal URL:

    http://s116375339.websitehome.co.uk/pixelnitro/Tuscany06/512%20experience.wmv

This should right-click(or option-click) > download with no problem. Tested cross a couple of platforms so far and counting...

Then try using Win Media player for OSX if on Mac or update the codes on your machine( shout of you can't - happy to help anytime ) :

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx

Ton: use your Windows XP image in Parallels and view it there after updating the version ( Help>Check for player updates - the rest is pretty much automatic)

If anyone genuinely still has problems I can always convert it to quicktime later and upload into a streaming darwin server somewhere, np

( Apologies if the following seems like meaningless technical drivel but it can help if you're interested in improving your online movie experience: )

Rob and anyone else with buffering stop/start probs: the above Depends on your connection and 'buffering settings' too; i.e. increase buffer size to ensure a reliable, 'judder' free experience:

    To do this:

    --

In Windows Media Player open Tools>Options and choose the Performance Tab.

Then in the -network buffer- section of that tab click the " buffer: XX seconds of content" option and set the buffer to something like 180-300 seconds - or even more if you're still getting playback problems.

    --

Shout if this doesn't make sense - advice is free today ;D

This might be only very slightly different in other versions of media Player (e.g. v9 or v11) but not that much so the instructions should still stand.

    Help?

Also try this embedded video page and link I just knocked up:

    http://pixelnitro.com/512/

Mac users: use Safari - it's better but I've tested it on Ie too and it works Ok with just a few error messages (the IE conversion to Mac OSX sucks)
