Hey everyone. I'm graduating college in December, and I plan on relocating to Boston. My degree is going to be in Finance, plus I had an accounting internship at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City.

    Reasons for moving up north:
    1. I fell in love with the city this past August when I visited for the first time.
    2. I particularly enjoyed the layout of the city and, being Italian, developed a huge appreciation for the North End.
    3. I know there is a lot of potential, with the type of degree that I will hold, to foster a successful career in the financial industry.
    4. I was quite amazed at how "nice" (of course that word is being used relative to my personal experiences in/ near my area) the people were, and how clean the areas of the North End and the Back Bay were as well.
    5. My girlfriend lives there.

    Problem:
Being that I will be completely new to the area, I have no contacts by way of securing a job interview. I have no idea where I want to (read: afford) live; however, I would really like to stay within the city.

I plan on visiting the area again during the Thanksgiving holiday to be with my girl and her family. If anyone in the area would be willing to lend me a hand in advice, possible connections to the industry, or even be my first friend in the area, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you very much. I hope that making this transition to a new area will be as smooth as it can be, realistically. I'm reaching out to the people of this forum, because we all share an appreciation for fine automobiles, and I like to think that people are nice enough to make someone feel more comfortable in an area that is completely alien to them.

    Hi there Vinnie,

I think you might struggle to get the fchat crew out "physically" thanksgiving weekend since its the big all american family holdiday. Plus we're starting to go into hibernation, so the weekly Starbucks event may not be happening much longer. Keep an eye out and you'll see whether the guys are meeting or not. Its about 25 miles north of Boston.

Wrt to "a job in the financial industry" its not clear where your shooting. But having worked both in the industry and now running a company that services it my thoughts would be:

    a) If you want to work for a broker/dealer or as a 'trader' you should move to NY not boston.
    b) If you want to work for the buyside/investment management community Boston is an equally good choice.

I'd phone up the big companies and ask about the grad recruitment campaigns. The biggest buysides in Boston are SSgA, Wellington Management Company and Fidelity. Plus there are loads of smaller companies and hedge funds. A lot of people start their careers in the bigger companies.

The big bucks are in being a fund manager for the buyside or a trader for the sellside. You'll need to be very very bright and have a very serious personality to get in to one of those jobs. An introduction won't get you far as a grad. I'd do as much research as you can on roles at different companies as you can.

All the above is assuming you don't mean insurance or other related industries about which I know little (other than as an end customer).

Of course State Street has its main offices here in the city. They do a lot of hiring out of college.

The North end is a decent (but acceptable) walk into the financial district. Which is good. Because parking is nearly nonexistent

Well technical parking is existent, its just that at 30$ a day its not very affordable :) Perhaps not something most first jobs include as a perk...

One other "harsh" reality, is Boston (girlfriend) vs New York (be a trader) might be a decision you need to think about. Don't know your GPA or how important work/life balance is to you. But if you are at the "Type A"/4.0 GPA/Work to live end of the spectrum, then that should be a consideration.

Hey everyone. Yes I'm bringing back to life a thread from a few months ago. I recently accepted a position with State Street Corporation and begin training on March 19. I'm making my move on the 7th to live with friends in the Back Bay area.

I'm very excited to be moving and looking forward to warm weather.

Special thank you to dan360 and Shotime for helping me figure things out.
