Flight Simulators, don't give you points, prizes, or high scores, so they really aren't games.

But Yes, Microsoft Flight Simulator, has an entire section on teaching the dynamics of flight. But it won't make you a pilot....You have to be 17 for that, and take real lessons from a flight instructor.

I'm a pretty avid flight simmer. I've nerded myself up to the stage of belonging to a virtual airline, flying online with VATSIM to get real ATC, and so on.

I do feel that my prior experience with microsoft flight simulator helped accelerate my real world flight training. Having said that, however, there are some things to note: (Also, I'm going to refer to the "games" as flight simulators, although that term really refers to full-motion, faa approved sims.)

    1) The likelyhood of developing bad habits is significant when your introduction to flight comes from "self-teaching" using a sim "game." You will do yourself a huge favor if you go buy the Airplane Flying Handbook (from any aviator shop) and read up on it, and then try to fly the sim using the proper methods. Even then, keep in mind that the actual procedures are going to be different in a real airplane.

    2) There is no "feel" in a flight simulator like in the real airplane, which makes flying them significantly different than a real one. Also, the field of view is tiny, and looking different directions involves pushing buttons, and can be disorienting, making situational awareness tricky.

    3) There are numerous errors in the flight dynamics in the simulators. There is just so much that goes on when flying an airplane that it is not possible or practical for the developers to accurately simulate it. They do a pretty darn good job though, considering.

Ok, so having said all of that, the benefits are numerous as well. You will get an idea of how an airplane behaves in response to control inputs, and how different factors relate to one another, and so on. I would highly recommend that if you want to get the full effect, buy a yoke and rudder pedals at least. CH makes a yoke, pedals, and a throttle quadrant that all help add to the effectiveness of the simulator in recreating what it's like to fly an airplane.

This was wordy, but I hope it helped...

I figured I'd throw this in as well.

My 2 favorite "simulators" are Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (MSFS), and X-Plane 8. Each has it's benenfits and drawbacks:

    MSFS:
Good stuff: - Visually outstanding. Everything looks about as real as it can.
    - The aircraft panels are pretty accurate to the real airplanes, at least they have been for the aircraft that I've flown in order to have a basis for comparison.
    - Lots of add-on software makes it a full-blown hobby. You can buy/download a whole bunch of airplanes and other mods to keep things interesting.

Bad stuff: - It's a resource hog. You need a pretty beefy computer to run it well.
    - The flight model is geared more towards "feeling" right, rather than actually being right. but, it's still pretty good.

    X-Plane:
Good stuff: - The flight model is outstanding. The method they use to simulate flight characteristics is completely different than MSFS, and is much more accurate.
    - You can design your own airplanes and fly them (this is time consuming, but a whole lot of fun... you can make some pretty crazy airplanes.)
    - Visuals are nice, but not quite as good as MSFS.
    Bad stuff:
    - The panels stink. They all look pretty much the same, there is no real correlation between them and the real airplane on most of the panels (the cessna is pretty good, so if that's all you want to fly, this isn't an issue.)
    - Not too many add-ons available for this one. You can download a lot of free aircraft for it, but they are made by hobbyists, not professionals, so they generally are not terribly accurate to the real model.

These are my opinions, yours may vary.
