Could be a million things. Definitely aftermarket. Does the car (or did the car) have a laser jammer or a radar detector? I had a similar button when I had a laser jammer on my Esprit.

Ok I’ll track down the guy who did this in Holland 25 years ago.

Do you think it was actually installed 25 years ago?

The car sat in a collection for nearly that long and never driven prior to my purchase so I believe it’s at least that old.
The car is as it was when it left the factory except for the one little red light on the console. Which I assume is the alarm system. The reason I asked is because I saw these red lights in many cars I looked at in Europe so I didn’t know if it was a factory thing for euro cars.

Never, hence my reply. If its not factory installed, (it wasn't) all anyone can do is guess. Do you really need hundreds of guesses? Will that lead to a conclusion?
Or maybe have a look and see what it is connected to, like some aftermarket electrical device stashed with the electrical equipment.

Factory equipment, optional of not is shown in the owners manual. Also a parts manual, both available in the public domain. Both with invaluable information.

The owners manual is so important those of us at dealers referred to them as the top secret document in the glovebox. Thats a reference to how often they are read.

Probably an immobilizer and an alarm armed light. Is it a momentary switch or a regular two position?
