This came up in another thread, and long ago in the Airbox restriction thread. I have emailed a guy in switzerland who made this cold air induction airbox using individual filters. Sharp FChat historians will also note Kermit's short air velocity stacks. He states these are easy to make and have a much improved flow - note that the box seals against the decklid.
He says he now makes these in carbon fiber.
    Interesting, no?

I've long wanted to seal against the decklid, too, but my big concern has always been one of maintaining sealing as the engine rolls. I've never measured how much there is, but that design sure looks like less than I was anticipating. Maybe it's best with some stiff torque rod bushings...

I sure wouldn't want to pay for such a thing in CF when I could get Al, though...!

i like it, but i have to be the guy with the dumb questions....

what do you do when a motor / trans mount fails and the thing dents the hood with upward pressure? one of my old 308s has 2 broken mounts on one side( happened the same time?) and the normal airbox was rubbing the engine lid, not to mention it would jam up between gears as the linkage got all tangled up.

seems like a cool idea, i wonder if CF would insulate it better from the engine heat? :)

Do you think that gentleman would sell me just a base plate already cut out with the carb holes? I want to use it to make my own design. Any thoughts?

He seems very nice on the emails we have exhanged. I would imagine you could do it locally less expensively. If you want to contact him:

I'm puzzled. I thought (and I'm not sure where I got this idea) the air flow around the engine was from under the car upward and then sucked out the vents in the bonnet. If this is the case then wouldn't it pull air away from the carbs rather than increase the flow into the carbs. I must be incorrect but I'm sure I heard this on this board.

I think you are correct about the airflow. The Romano Airbox seals against the flat UNLOUVERED engine bonnet lid forming an enclosed airbox. It recieves outside air only from the starboard scoop into the enclosed plenum.

    Hey Russ,

Is the pictured airbox on a GT4? My 78 GTS has the snout centrally located and not swept back like in the pic. Do you know if they have one for my car?

Each one is a custom - I'd take this photo to a local fab shop with your old airbox as a pattern and individual filters and have them make one, then have it polished or powdercoated.

Making the bottom sheet is not very hard. Get a big piece of cardboard and lay it over the carbs. Gently tap out the pattern. Cut it out and test it for size and then transfer it to the piece of steel. After that you can do what ever you want with it.

It's nothing fancy but it works.

How tall are those air cleaners?

So why not just build it with a top on the box? Other than it would keep you from looking at those pretty air filters every time you open the engine lid?

I'm guessing it's a clearance issue between the tops of the individual filter arrangement and the closed engine cover - a top wouldn't fit.

Far more interesting... Keep using the ramair from the side scoop(s) with your filtration there and run the trumpets OPEN for maximum open height above the intake.
