I was looking at a 2008 F430 F1 the other day, had around 20k miles, has been tracked, and was previously owned by a rental company. Service records all look clean, well maintained, under warranty for a few more months. Any idea what a fair price would be on something like this? What kind of wear and tear would tracking cause on a car like this that I might be worried about.

    Asking is $120k.

My be pushing it, but offer $110k and see what happens. If the car is well sorted and ppi is clean, buy and start enjoying!!
I wouldn't sweat it if you miss the price buy a couple grand.

Has been tracked can vary from driven one day to spending it's entire life on track.

What do the brakes and rotors look like?

How many, and how severe, off track excursions has it made?

Depending on what you were planing on using the car and it's current condition it could be a very nice opportunity for you.

there are so many 430's out there, I probably wouldn't bother unless I could get it for under $100k.

In this market you have your choice of many nice cars. When buying stuff you always have to think about selling it.

This is a tough one. A thorough PPI would be an absolute must. Pay special attention to the brakes. New ones are incredibly expensive. Bear in mind that its history will always be a negative when selling. For that price, I think I would prefer a well cared for 05 or 06.

Even for a deep discount, I personally woudn't buy a rental (a personal rule I have on buying used cars). If you decide to move forward, ONLY do it for a DEEP discount. You need to assume it has been abused- driven to redline max throttle on cold oil, hitting curbs, etc. Even if only 10% of renters "abuse" the car, that is lots of abuse- it will always have a lower resale and be tougher to sell, and something tells me the number is greater than 10%. These aren't $10,000 used rental Saturn Ion's here (even one of those I wouldn't buy with a rental history!)

People can say what they want- this is my opinion only...so many other no stories cars out there to be bought.

No way id buy a rental Ferrari unless it's 50% less than market value. Just ask people what they would do if they were offered a Ferrari for a day...

The only way to know if the car has been abused is to ask them to connect the car on a SD3 or SDX and to give you the following values. It doesn't replace a PPI but the PPI doesn't replace this neither ;)

    MAX. ENGINE RPM VALUE
    MAX. SPEED VALUE
    MAX. WATER TEMPERATURE VALUE
    MAX. OIL PRESSURE VALUE
    MAX. OIL TEMPERATURE VALUE
    MAX. OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE VALUE
    LONGER TRIP
    KEY-CONTROLLED TIME
    ENGINE RUNNING TIME
    TIME WITH GEAR IN NEUTRAL
    ENGINE START-UP CYCLES
    NUMBER OF GEARSHIFTS
    ASR COUNTER ACTIVE

Thanks, I'll definitely get the car hooked up to an SD3/SDX.

I forgot to note that I was planning to use this car as a track car, and likely will put a bunch more miles on it, so the high mileage and the track usage is perfectly fine with me, not entirely certain about the rental history though, but I'm hoping the PPI/SD3 info turns out positive.

You might check on the warranty, too. On many cars, commercial use will void the warranty. Not sure what Ferrari's says. They might not have been too worried about being part of a rental fleet.

are you planning on using it exclusively as a track car?

If so, a Stradale/Scuderia/Challenge car is probably a better way to go.

If it is going to be a track only car then the lightweight variants would probably be the better option. Although this car has the CCBs, the scud, strad, challenge cars are designed with tracking in mind.

And again, check the brakes, the CCBs are a fortune to replace.

It's actually a cross between a track car and a semi daily driver/road trip car. I only really get to go to the track maybe 4 or 5 times/year, and I'd like to enjoy driving it other times as well. I test drove a Scuderia, but the thing is just so loud all the time, I can't really imagine driving that anywhere that's far away.

The scuderia isnt loud unless the valves open. You can definitely hear the radio, at normal volume, when cruising on the highway at 70 mph.

Maybe the one you drove had aftermarket parts?

Mm, that's possible, I didn't ask about the details, but it was at a dealership so I would have assumed the dealer would have mentioned anything that wasn't stock. He rattled off quite a list of other things. I can ask again. Do the valves only close up in sport mode at low rpms? I know on the 458 Italia, in race mode the valves are just open all the time, whereas on sport mode the thing quiets down at low throttle.

If you were to shop around hard what would the realistic price difference on this be vs. a babied lower mile car? I'll bet it's $10 - 15K. I'd much rather have the non-thrashed car. Find out what a realistic wholesale is by calling around to dealers as if you've got one to trade in based on a low mile example.

As Tazandjan mentioned many manufacturers are funny about rental fleet cars. You may want to check into this car's true warranty, if any, with FNA before you even consider paying for a PPI.

In my opinion, unless you plan on using at the track all the time and being the last owner of it, I would not buy it. The history is always going to follow the car. Remember there are tons of F430's out there as the economy was strong when they were new. Now there seems to be a glut of cars out there. Considering your needs, why buy this one unless it is well under $100k.
