Great postings, queries, and insightful obeservations on the Motovanti intake tube. The thought of having a rigid connection between engine and air box is scary to me too, and we build the Motovanti.

However, with 3" of silicone hose at each end of the Motovanti and considering that at least 1.5" per side are 'free' to absorb energy/vibration/damping, the reaction rod is far less compensatory. So the reaction rod is WAY more rigid that the soft silicone on each end of the Motovanti.

And believe me, I looked for a complete silicone hose or other 'stock' part available for this application. Some of you can possibly dig one up, but I never found the correct degree of angle and shortness of legs offered within that radius bend. So, I had a couple dozen Motovantis made with more on the way.

I guess we could all look at flow charts until we fell over, but the "dryer hose" I took off my 328 was constricting, narrowing most in the kinked turn, with a generally turbulent interior all the way up. The Motovanti and/or the suitable 3" silicone is just that - 3" of unobstructed air flow all the way in.

Plus, it looks great, which is AT LEAST half the reason I admittedly love these cars. So there, I said it. My twin turbo 993 is a hot piece and will run rings around the 328 of course, but there is no view of any car that rivals the 328 (and a few other favorite "F" cars) ... inside or out.

The Motovanti is not for everybody (we don't build enough if it was!) but it's a pretty painless improvement in aesthetic and airflow. If you feel it's "risky", then by all means do not get one. That's totally up to you.

Thanks for the welcome and yes, I wish I'd come aboard earlier too. But brother Dave Merideth seems to have done a great job with real-world application, common sense and has responded in kind. Dave, you're hired!

I don't do these for the money; this is a father-son project that a car-loving but overly-busy father felt would be fun this summer. I responded twice to the rigidity issue question from other "chatters" on this board. Clearly those never got posted. Sometimes the controversy is half the fun I guess.

Another batch is being crafted now. The website works fine, though changes are being made. Thanks for all the posts.

Hi Guys...I normally don't post but since I recently bought one of the air intakes off EBAY...I can tell you I had no problems with it. I actually didn't think about the flex issues until I noted everyone diving into it.....

Coincidentally, I had just finished plumbing a custom Cryo & intercooler system on my NSX . I had a lot of left over Red silicone flex joints & such from SAMCO and decided to use these on the Ferrari intake install vs the supplied black ones from Motovonti. Also, I used T-clamps as I don't like to use the old screw drive clamps.

At any rate...it looks 100% better then the OEM intake and as far as this vendor...his communication was great with me....he even emailed me 2-3 times during and after the process. It arrived within a couple of days of payment and he followed up afterward.

I buy a lot of various silicone hoses, adapters and quality T clamps from "Samco", "Hosetechniques" and a few from Aeroquip....

For the price of original hoses (oil, water, gas) I find I can replace them with Stainless using AN connectors or silicone hose...

I don't go to shows with the Ferrari's so I'm not worried about points. Since 308's and 328's don't bring much money anyway...I figured I didn't hurt there value anyway...

Plus...I like to make it home

I bought one this past summer for an 89 GTS to replace the old hose and for the looks that it brings to the engine bay.

I bought one 3 weeks ago and am very happy with its looks. Haven't installed it yet, as I am looking for a few other "things" to add to it to "liven it up". When I am done, I would guess that there will be a few others that will be interested in doing what I did.

I will be posting about it, when finished......

And, yes, there will be pics.... ;-)

    Weird,
Did anyone notice on the motovanti website that the pictures of the engine bay are different? The first one has a red baldwin filter and the second one a black filter with something metal(magnet?) wrapped around it. The engine looks cleaner and the airbox has the stencil on it too. No biggie just happened to notice it.....

Several people have tried this tube, but I haven't seen any comments whether there was any difference in the before and after performance. It seems like the flow would be better -- but increased intake temperature from the metal tube heating up would seem to be a greater concern. Can anybody provide before/after comments and also indicate how hot the tube gets after extended driving (maybe it doesn't get that hot because it is insulated by rubber on both ends)?

This looks like a hight quality item at a very reasonable price. I would like to get one, and I'm not too concerned if it doesn't increase power, but I'd like to be sure it isn't a step backwards because of the heat.

Or maybe in carbon fiber from Rob Calisi at Carbonio? And with an accordion fitting at the base which allows plenty of movement.

(Please excuse the dirty engine compartment...)

Saves weight, too! Seriously, I love the look.

Steven, I think it comes out to be the same cost as the Motovanti.

Think of it as current flowing through a series of resistors. If you lower the resistance of one of them, there indeed is a slight increase in current flow. Air flow through piping works the same way in subsonic situations. Each part is a slight resistance. Lowering the resistance of any one of them increases air flow. Trick is to determine which is the greatest impediment to flow.

Your comment about the same size tube upstream limiting air flow is only true when you have mach 1 condtitions. That is not the situation here. The reason why mach 1 is limiting is because pressure signals cannot propagate upstream because pressure signals travel at mach 1. Flow is then a function of cross sectional area in that case.

You are correct that it is not on our website. This is a side project that I undertook with Mike C's encouragment and help. It seems to work well so we'll sell them in limited numbers to interested owners. To be competitive pricing will be exactly the same as the Motovanti unit offering the customer free choice of a metal or carbon fiber option with no price penalty. So to confirm, pricing will be:

$129 USD + $9 Shipping to anywhere in the Continental US or Canada. I'll quote international shipping on a case by case basis for now.

    hello,
i just purchased one of these units for my 308 qv; communication was great and delivery quite fast (the holidays did delay it a bit, but no big deal).
installation is EASY, 5 minutes (you need 4 of those minutes just to remove the old rubber one, it gets stuck in place pretty solid..).
first of all, it looks really sharp and spruces up the engine bay nicely - now i really HAVE to clean the rest :)
the old one feels really rigid, i would not worry about lack of flexibility with the new one, the two rubber ends allow sufficient movement.
i have driven the car a bit, traffic too heavy to really 'feel' any difference; at least it doesn't feel worse, that's for sure.
i did not feel much difference in the heat either; yes, the aluminum part does get warm but i wouldn't say it is much warmer - if anything- than the old rubber part.
i feel that this smoother intake, together with the new exhaust i recently installed (stebro), and the k+n i am installing this week, will allow the engine to 'breath' more freely, thereby improving performance.
i noticed a dramatic improvement right after the stebro was installed; in order to get the full effect however you need to remove the 4 silencers/mufflers from the pipes (they are easy to remove or reinstall) ... and the sound is SICK ... i am now tempted to get the hyperflow cats too, to really complete the job (that's the beauty of ferrari ownership, you never end playing with it...).

Is this your car, and did you have any problems fitting it, I just received one and the Cf tube fits too tight between the plenum and airbox without the rubber hoses on, giving no play at all, I have enclosed a pic, please excuse my awful mess of an engine bay (I will be sorting that soon)
