As some of you might know, I am now looking for a 456 manual gearbox in France, where I am now spending nearly half the year on and off. The only 456's in my price range seem to be 1994 - 1997's - the looks of the vented hood I actually prefer, so that's good. But they all seem to have lots of miles - so far what I've found is examples with up to 125,000 kms ( say 75,000 miles.

There seems to be a general belief that actually driving up the miles is better than having a "garage queen".

Am curious about other's experiences in maintaining these cars up to and beyond such mileages (apart from the expected tires, belts, and general servicing...) Is there a limit at which we can expect a major engine/transmission/other components overhaul?

    Thanks for your feedback.

You need to look at some of the mileage threads on the 550 & 575 too as its basically the same engine - they tend to be nicely run in at 50 000 miles - my recollection is there have been several threads referring to 456 with over 200 000 km

My wife's 456 has 56k miles. Engine is running strong. All compressions are excellent. Leak down perfect. These engines are renowned for being unstressed in the 456. I'd be more concerned about the body. The mechanicals are much easier to fix.

I don't think 125.000 km is that much for a 456. My 550 is well over that and running fine, in my search for a 550 is saw one with a mileage of 260.000 km.

My 550 has 66k miles and has zero issues. Engine pulls harder than my other 400hp+ cars. Many of the 'driver' 456s and 550s are better taken care of compared to low mile examples which have sat around.

I have 63K on mine, but I did have the dreaded valve guides and valves done around 15,000 miles ago.

What is the prognosis on how far it will go now? Assuming you got the upgraded guides.

It will probably last longer than I will :D

All I can say is that I have not had to add oil between annual maintenances.

A good friend of mine bought 3 456's in 2000. Two 1997 456 GTA's, and one 2000 456M GTA - all cars have over 90k miles on them. He bought 2 originally (his and his wife's) but utilized them as daily drivers and couldn't stand driving something else, so added the 2000 456M at the time.

Two have had complete head rebuilds. I'm about to purchase his high mileage 2000 456M GTA after it needed a head gasket @ 90k miles.

Buy, maintain, drive until the end. You will spend probably a few hundred thousand usd or euros before the end.. Good luck. Just use it like you would with any other normal car and don't use it as a racing car.

I think 175k miles is the most I have seen on a red 456 for sale in the US. I am sure there will be more like it, but not all will be in the open like that, as quite a few will have been clocked in their history. Some will beg to differ, imho it is not that that necessarily matters that much, these were grand tourers after all, and 150k miles at autobahn speeds for most of Europe or US is not much for such a car, let alone 30-60k which is what most have on the odometer.
For recent rises in valuation, if you bought a 456 five years ago and drove it 10k each year you will still be ahead in value despite the mileage increase.

Money and parts availability determine what is "the end". That means that by now for most '70's and older Ferraris there is not really an end anymore unless you burn or seriously wreck it. This seems to be a rolling window so it may one day apply to these as well.
