Does anyone know what the maximum height or vertical clearance is to fit under standard highway overpass bridges?

I am trying to figure out if a 57' boat is transportable overland. Not sure if it would fit under high overpasses because I cannot figure out how tall they are despite an hour of googling!

    Hi Terry,
I hate to say this but the standards aren't that standard. Especially from state to state.

I am guessing the best place to go for information is a commercial trucking company that specializes in heavy hauling in your area to find out what the maximum height fixed load they can run without a pilot car.

I see many leading pilot cars with adjustable poles mounted vertically with the height adjusted to the LOWEST clearance along the proposed route.

Another source could be your local Department of Transportation or the State Engineering Department. They all have to design to minimums.

Show us some pictures of the big day!!
    Good luck.

In Michigan, it seems that the signs that I have seen are from 13' 6" to 14" 3".

I think I read somewhere that the federal standard for a minimum maximum is either 12'-6" or 13'-6", but I'm afraid even that can vary by overpaving etc...

Take a look at this site, choose the States you will drive through, then find the height restrictions or vertical clearance section. Each State is different.

Iowa seems to be pretty well updated. California has limited info but provides a contact at caltrans.

I have been in the trucking business for several years. Generally speaking, all interstates have bridge clearances that will accomodate semi-trailers that have a height of 13'6". West of the MS River, trailers as high as 14' are accomodated without any issues.

The other issues are length and width. I would suggest that you contact a company that specializes in moving boats. They will know the answers to your specific questions and will not charge you anything for the advice.

A boat of this size will not be cheap to transport, so if your boat can be transported, they will more than make up for their expertise.

if you are unable to find anyone, you might try 'Dependable Auto Shippers' in Mesquite TX. They specialize in auto transport, but also move 'oversize' cargo. I think that they could help you in your quest to transport your boat.

Sounds bad. Could be a deal killer.

This boat would need to be shipped from Chattanooga TN to Lake Lanier north of Atlanta. We can get it to Chattanooga on its bottom via the Tennessee River system, but would have to go overland from there.

I fear that it would either have to go via roads with no bridges (if that is even possible) or have the entire pilot house / sundeck structure removed which is something I simply would not do. :(

If your boat is in an area where there are many boats, then service shops and marinas will be there too. Any of them should be able to refer you to a BOAT hauler. And the BH will be able to answer all of your questions.

Also, it is not at all uncommon to disassemble a boat for transport. Done all the time. As a matter of fact, a lot of large boats make their first trip overland.

    Good Luck!
