Paid a visit to my old friend Paul Hill at Hill Engineering today. They've just moved into new premises and thought I'd take a look. Didn't get a chance to take pictures, but his new place is very impressive.

He showed me some Titanium bolts.... and I just couldn't resist getting a set.

He also showed me some bolt hole covers.

When I had my 355 wheels painted, they painted the metal inserts as well which they shouldn't have done. The proper way is to either take them out or use the covers.

I had to buy a new set of inserts ... and yes I did get my money back from the so called wheel experts!!

On the right is the painted wheel insert.

    On the left the cover.

Nice stuff! Those bolts look like the ones on my CS... I already have CS headers on my 355 maybe I should get some of those fine looking bolts too. Hmm, CS Seats would also be nice in the 355... Oh, wait I am dreaming out load sorry about that.

This is all very well, but apparently our wheels are falling apart..........see recent post started by Tim Walker (inserts) and followed up by Terry.

Indeed, the original Ferrari inserts do commonly crack. Remanufactured ones are available from Hill Engineering:

Someone mentioned to me there were a 22 and 23 mm insert depending on year and/or if a challenge wheel. I have not researched it

OMG another BFD to discuss at infinitum. By the way, what is the point of titanium lug bolts? Just something else to spend unneeded $$ on?

    - They are stonger
    - They are lighter
    - They are not plated (I don't think), so no plating will chip
    - Very corrosion resistant

They do not chip and rust.
    They are beautiful.
    They are way lighter.
    They are more betterer.

Dave, just how many lug bolts have you broke? Should we add the to the valve guides and headers list? :) You can probably save more weight by taking the tool kit out of the trunk; not installing that super stereo; leaving the fuel tank a gallon low;....plated lugs look better; is corrosion really an issue? And you have to carry a special tool to get them off.

(Just pulling your chain. I have to live up to being "grumpy".) Obviously you are technically correct on all points, but I don't see where any of them really matter. Kind of like the back center wheel emblems. I'll go Soca1 on this one, "it's a bling thing".

John, I only stated the facts. I did not pull my wallet out :D

But, I did spend north of $500 for new Hill chrome plated lug bolts. Ferrari OEM are like $120 each..

Good to hear but why not just have the old ones re-chromed? Your probably not driving much these days. Oh, I just thought of another good thing about titanium. It's flammable. Nothing brightens up you day like flaming lug bolts. :(

John, I don't have that much energy. 50% at best of mine has chips, I just said screw it and bought a full set (still not installed) the Hill ones are supposed to be much better chrome, we shall see. Remember, it's 20 bolts so the each price was reasonable. Screwing around with re chrome would have been maybe 1/2 with a risk. As I said, I did not have that much energy. You are retired with much more time than me :D

Titanium is lighter than steel, tougher than aluminum, and has much higher melt and ignition points than aluminum, so the wheels will burn before the bolts do. That is why titanium was used on the SR-71. Aluminum would melt at mach 3.5, and even mach 2.5 for long enough. Titanium is not stronger than steel. Can be tougher to machine, but not as strong.

I have them on my car too, only OEM. The HE bolts are beautiful, and either set lowers unsprung weight a bit.

Mostly cosmetic, though, and a nice present for your redhead girlfriend.

One other point. I'm not too worried about it. As long as the wheels don't fall off I'm good. :)

When I said "risk" with re chrome I meant issues with the chrome not being done properly, not issues with the bolt's strength.

I knew what you meant, Dave. Just making a point about my priorities. What I do find interesting is that on my 29 year old 308 there is a little pitting of the chrome as will happen with age, but no flaking. On my F355 all the lugs are perfect except for two with have some flaking at one of the corners. For $19 each maybe I'll replace them.....some day.

By the way, cold enough for you?

You have no idea how envious I am of the guys in California. I love the area here and the people but the weather is really getting old. 1/2 of my life is in crap weather....

    ;(
