There are some great write-ups on here, Ricambi, and other sites in how to replace the OEM plastic bushing with the hill aluminum bushing. I won’t repeat all the details but I just did mine and have a few tips to add. I didn’t think my shifter was ‘sloppy’ but decided to upgrade as preventative maintenance. Good thing I did, the plastic busing was cracked when I removed it.

I didn’t remove the shifter mechanism from the car, I was able to do it in situ and didn’t take the center console completely out. I did remove the screws from the center console but just lifted it up to get the snap ring out. No electrical connectors were disconnected. If you ride bikes, the plastic tire lever/removal tool works perfect to remove the leather pieces from the center console without damaging them.

However, it’s a good idea to shove paper towels around the mechanism so you don’t accidentally drop the plastic block or roll pin requiring you to take the whole assembly out to retrieve.

I was able to drive the pin out with a 2mm punch and shaft in 4th gear position with center console in place.

Everything was straight forward and took about 1.5 hours (after memorizing the procedure thanks to others).

I’d recommend getting a new roll pin, otherwise you might have to file it down on one end just a tad to get it back in easily. Tapping it out expands it just a bit as it’s hollow. I used my 2mm punch in the back side to hold the shaft/reverse block/spring in position while I tapped the pin back in from the front.

It’s very greasy work, have plenty of paper towels and rags.
