Seeing if anyone else has historic plates on their Ferrari. The California DMV states that if your car was manufactured after 1926 and is at least 25 years old, you pay the $34 and get Historic Tags.

I got them for my '77 308 and they look kinda cool on the car. The DMV also stated that the car is smog exempt when sold in California with these plates.

I have them on my 1959, its a one time fee of $35.00. The only downside is that you are supposed to only use the car for shows and parades etc. and very limited miles. If you drive the car seldom it is not a problem.

I thought all cars 1975 and newer had to be smog tested, period. I've been looking for a great 308 and have been turning down Euro cars because of the smog issue.

    Anyway, can you post pics?

Correct. The law reads For Primary Use for Shows, Parades and Car Related Events. If I attend 3-5 drives a year that are related events like organized drives, etc., I'm within the law, as the majority of my driving is short, local trips. It's a good deal.

In Nevada they are called Classic Vehicle plates. They are available for cars over 20 years old, for an initial fee of $36 and $10 annual renewal. I have them on my 1968 365.

A smog test is required the first year of registration (unless the car is 1967 or older), but the car is exempt thereafter so long as it is driven less than 2500 miles per year. No other restrictions, such as only parades or shows, etc.

We also have a couple of other categories: Old Timer for over 40 years old, and Horseless Carriage :) for built before 1915.

Here in Washington the car has to be at least 30 years old to qualify. It would be nice.

In PA a vehicle 20 yrs old can have a classic plate, but there are restrictions on yearly miles and times of day when it could be on the road.
Flip side is that you can manipulate the removal of the cat converters completely!

Here in Tennessee I have an antique plate for my '79 308GTS. It never expires- no reg fees! And my insurance dropped! Love it.

In Virginia, once you have these plates (cars over 20 yrs), you never have to pay registration again, never have to get the state inspection (the best reason of all), pay no car tax, no county tax, and no recurring fees at all. You're done! There is no milage limitation but it is to be used for pleasure only. Cant wait till 2008 to get them for the 328.

If you have historic plates does California still require the front plate to be installed?

I know most people don’t have a front plate on their Ferrari, I don’t, but they are starting to enforce it. Maybe this could be a solution for classic cars.

In NJ we have a "Collector Car" status for limited use (3,000 Miles Year)

You get two plates when you register the car, but it looks like a good way to leave it off and talk yourself out of a ticket.

My '86 has been in NJ it's whole life, and looks like it never had a front plate on it.

I've got the Pantera and Triumph as Antique: no inspection, good for five years. I'll definitiely do the 308 when it hits the 25 year point. I've always hated the whole inspection process. Hell, I might do it on my old truck.
