One of my customers turned down $560,000 middle of 2005 for Vic #7, the offer came from T.W. BTW. Another one, Vic #9, went for circa $525,000 in 2003.

And to think TW paid Geoff Dutton $104k for number "4" about 8yrs (?) ago.
The single and two digit plates are pretty bullet proof investments. The people who have them tend to be wealthy enough not to be affected by economic cycles.

It was only 18mths ago that I missed out on a 2 digit (37 from memory) for $84k. It would now be at least twice that.

yeah i saw the '9' plate advertised somewhere last week, meant to mention it to you but fergot...

it seemed ridiculous at the time, but your rationalization of it as an investment and just imagining how dam cool it would look on the car makes me think it is a good idea! :)

if you have a lazy $200k burning a hole next week i'd say offer that and see what happens. i should have a lazy $8.50 laying around somewhere by next week... just enough for hahndorf bacon n eggs...

sorry man, they suck. leave the stupid L33T H4X0R plates to the losers in jap cars who think they're hot shat. if i saw any of those plates on the respective car i'd just wince. i like seeing a properly written word on a plate, not a fan of seeing stoopid ways you can tell people what your car is, if you can't say it without being 'clever', don't say it.

my favourite lotus plate (i think he's in WA, you might know him from the lotus boards) is [FUR ELISE], now THAT'S cool!

if you want info on getting into the plate game, check this guy out: http://stores.ebay.com.au/NUMBER-PLATE-TRADER

$84k for 37 would have been a pretty good buy, no doubt.

I agree it would be at least twice that today (more?).

The question is by how much would it appreciate again in the next 18 months?

My personal opinion is that they're all pretty much fully valued now, and I'm not sure if the massive gains that were made in the last few years, are still there to be made. I think they'll continue to rise incrementally with time, but at no where near the rate they've done. Perhaps they've been (relatively) undervalued for a while, hence the massive appreciation in the last few years. Again, this is all my own personal, uninformed opinion.

To me, they're a form of art in their own right, and that's my primary interest.

Depending on what it would have taken for the deal to be struck (and whether or not price was actually the sticking point), I can't really see that there has been dramatic movement there in relative terms, considering the gains made by other combinations in the same period (for eg doubling and more).

BTW GTR Magic: I know we've already stated that the plate itself has little intrinsic value, the exception would be if one was to have an original vitreous enamel plate stolen from the car. That would be terribly sad IMO, from a sentimental perspective.

How old is that article? I think I recall an auction report that has single digit NSW plate sell for $1mil+

In 2001 I could have bought WA '26' for $20k. Should have, I was humming about it at the time, but passed on it.
