    F Peeps,

I'd like to learn a bit more about Ferrari history, not just racing history, but also development of the business. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

First of all congratulations with the purchase of your Ferrari.

I would highly recommend the following book:

    Origins of the Ferrari Legend.

It's written by Gioachino Colombo. Yes, that's the father of the Colombo engine. It tells the story of the early development years of the Ferrari company. A must for every Ferrari fan.

As I recall there's a thread in the collectibles section that has dozens of suggestions covering this theme - something like 'best ferrari books'

I have Dennis Adler's "Ferrari: The Road from Maranello", which is a nice coffee table book and also a decent history. It winds up coverage with the F512M, IIRC.

Excellent book, but long out of print, and difficult to find. It can occasionally be found on e-bay for under $50.

An entire collection of Forza (magazine), they occasionally come up for sale as well. Of course, you'll need a subscription to stay current.

Cavallino would be the better option.

Cavallino: Ferrari history and indepth info on old individual cars. Very little on 1980+ cars. Tried to change that with the 2 newsletters of couple years ago but now they are "absorbed" back into the main issue.

Forza: More focused on modern day Ferraris and Ferrari racing.

Agreed that Cavallino magazine is far superior on the old cars and old stories.

There are an assortment of good books on Ferrari but you probably need to decide what portions of the history is going to interest you then proceed from there. There are the various eras (earliest years, the late 50s and the 60s, etc.), specific models or a series, common theme (Marcel has done the Vignale book and the 2 volume set on the various coachbuilders). There is one book "Cobra and Ferrari Wars" by Mike Shoen that is about the Cobra but to tell its story does a lot of work on the Ferraris it competed against.

There have become so many books on Ferrari over the years that the newest ones of any significance have become very specialized.

I have acquired my books over the years so many are now out of print. Even so you may be able to find them via E-Bay or Amazon. Ferrari Market Letter sells Ferrari books and sometimes has older ones.

A few to get started with:

A Champions View by Phil Hill - a lot of personal remembrances of specific models

Inside Ferrari - history and development of the factory

Memoirs of Enzo Ferrari's lieutenant - a lot of individual stories from the start of the 1960 to the 1990s

Ferrari Legend (author: Jess Pourret) - 250 GT race cars from the Tour de France through the GTO

Gioachino Colombo, Origins of the Ferrari Legend

The general overview books would be:

Ferrari author: Hans Tanner with later editions updated by Doug Nye

Ferrari, Forty Years on the Road author: Stan Nowak

Ferrari The Man and the Machines author: Stan Grayson

These should be enough to make you and the UPS delivery man on friendly terms.
