How many countries, not colonies like India nor protectorates like Palestine, were there in the world at the end of WWII? Some countries that existed before WWII vanished like Estonia, some were formed later like Israel. But at the End of WWII, how many were there? 60 maybe?

Right now there are ~192 countries. Depending on whether or not Taiwan is considered a seperate country.

I've got a feeling that there were about 90-100 or so countries circa 1945. You have to remember at this point though good portions of Africa and the Middle East are under the control of colonial powers, South America a lot of Asia are independent countries. So the number will shrink greatly, but I don't think it will drop down from 192 to 60.

Though Wikipedia lists 76 countries as "active, invaded or remaining neutral" in WWII. So the number is likely at least 76.

I dont know, whichis why I am asking. My brother got the question today and called me but I ant got a clue.

    Examples,

India and Packistan did not exist.

Almost all of Africa was a colony.

    Canada did not exist.

Tiwan was still a part of China

Independance from brittian was in the 50's which is why it does not count.

Well ... USSR sure was full of little countries (including Estonia you mentioned). As well as colonies ...I'd have to guess around a 100.

Canada was 1867, right after the US Civil war.

Also interesting to see pre-WWI maps of Africa, when the whole thing was divided up between Europe. Note the only "indepedendent" one was the one affiliated with America.
