I don't know about you guys, but I have always had hobbies in my life. I get really passionate about my hobbies and like to completely saturate myself into them. They end up occupying much of my free time as well as much of my thought process. It always starts the same way, something catches my interest and I only plan to "dabble" in it. Before I know it, I'm hardcore into the hobby taking it to a degree I never expected and usually this envolves spending excessive amounts of money you would have thought of as crazy before. Oh yea, another thing, my taste in hobbies are never cheap and usually end up stretching me out financially. I've always related well to people who had a similar infatuation with their hobbies and understood why they do what others would consider crazy, like the guy that spent countless bucks and thousands of hours building that scaled down racing Ferrari with a fully running V12, working gear box etc. Or like those Model Rocket builders they showed on discovery channel that would spend most of their small saleries and free time on building rockets for a contest where they would often just blow up destroying hundreds of hours of work/design etc. I can completely relate to those people because I know when you are infatuated with your hobby there is no such thing as "Work" since it's all a labor of love.

Then there are the people that basically have no real hobbies (to me anyway.) I really don't understand those types of people. But then again I wonder if maybe what they love to do I simply don't consider a Hobby? Does everyone have hobbies? And what exactly is a hobby? One of my bestfriends has no hobbies but is really into fitness, diet, and working out. Is sculpting your body a hobby? What about making money? For many people, gaining as much money as possible is a hobby for them. However, if that is truely your hobby you should never complain about going to work, or having to work, as that would be a painless labor of love. What about sports? People that are really into playing a certain sport, is that a hobby? Some people even consider watching sports a hobby, is that a hobby?

So besides the philosophical ideas of what things are truely hobbies and what arn't I want to hear some of your hobbies. The ones that you are completely infatuated with. Ones that take up all your free time and money. And especially if your hobby makes everyone around you think your crazy because they simply can't relate as to why you do what you do. This seems to be the nature of most of my hobbies.

No it's not! This could be a good thread!

I flew R/C planes until I started a company that sold into the hobby industry. Now I don't have any time to fly planes! It really sucks!

No doubt Ive got the weirdest hobby, or more specifically, Passion, of anyone else my age. I am rediculously passionate about "early music"...that is, classical music written between around 1600-1800 :)

I love Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical period classical music with such passion that I have nearly 800 CDs of music just from those 200 years alone. I spend the better part of my days listening to that music...and not as background music...I mean I sit in a chair or lay in my bed and do nothing but listen.

So, early music is my passion, collecting early music CDs is my passionate hobby!

I think thats why I dont have a girlfriend :)

I do plastic and RC planes and cars. Ever since I was a kid I've dreamed about what it would be like to fly or drive them, and it really helps me relax.

Go to any flight school. Tell them you have $60 and would like an intro lesson. You will be flying a plane in an hour.

I love collecting model cars, reading car magazines. My number one hobby/obsession would have to revolve around the automobile; collecting models, driving cars, reading about them, talking about them, anything! In the future, I hope to collect the real ones as well. I like aircraft, enjoy playing golf, squash and swimming, but nothing compares to my car-itis. The internet certainly doesn't help! :D

I think what it requires is reverence. Some inanimate objects have souls.

Since my Mom bought '68 Topps by the case back then, my brother and I each receiving a pack a weekday, my out-of-pocket investment was around $5.00. While I still have thousands of baseball cards in a box equivalent to 4 shoeboxes primarily from late 60's - during accumulation phase - (Oldest [in poor condition - but the colors, oh, man] are @ 80 yrs. old - received along with '33 Goudys and '50's Bowmans as part of cash/trade for '68 "commons" in '80) - haven't sold/traded any in over 15 years.

Still have Hot Wheels from kidhood stored away. Thanks again, Mom!

Where I did go out of pocket on initial investment was vintage surfboards - I had reverence for the cadillac-smooth beauties which weren't exactly a liquid liquid investment *heh* I saw the uh, wave *ducks* coming and accumulated some beauties from late 50's-early 70's. Lemme tell ya - boards over 10' long take up space!

Held onto some longer than others, depending on how I liked them as performers, ding repairs (though leashless, never damaged any myself), where I saw potential in the undeveloped market. Only board I practically gave away was to a friend - I'd picked up 2 for 20 bucks - sold 1 to him for 20 and he was a happy, happy, happy camper to have one from the early days of a shop where he'd first gotten Surf Fever as a kid - Jack's of Huntington Beach (around since '57). Later sold the heavy 11'3" Surfboards Hawaii from that pair with massive fin for $300. Other 1/2 dozen sold for 250 on average. 2 were sold from out from under me after separation in D.C., where I remained for a spell - Ex contacted her brother in Santa Barbara - that absolutely perfect, late 60's Banana Yellow Jacobs was mine, azzwipes. Cost back then? Anywhere from 5 to 80. Now? Don't even want to think about it.

Incidentally, a week after I picked up that anecdotal pair, another bud scored a Mickey "Da Cat" Dora shaped by none other than the legendary Greg Noll - he bought it from same place (I still won't say where) for 20 dollars. Pre-counterfeit (yes, there are counterfeit vintage boards), absolutely perfect, worth a hella stack & I'm told has it to this day.

Also stayed a step ahead of vinyl record collecting, as I was picking mint, later collectable albums for .10 each from the unaware - selling for upwards of $50.00 a pop. Albums ran the whole gamut, though Blues were hardest to find. After all, how many West Coasters have Blues 78s - which would be the creme de la creme/keepers for me?

I did a hella bunch of research on ukuleles a few years ago, but the curve was already up & I'm not going there again, didn't get burned. but turnaround time/money was flat - too many were hip to the prospects. Still have 1 - it's over 50 years old & cost more than a buck a year.

Save for maybe the Hot Wheels of that era (Japan? US?) All of the above were made in the USA.

As for now - it's been a few years since we talked about it, as we don't talk about our skin colors being different much - but I suppose I'll broach the subject of Salt and Pepper shakers to my bride - during our courtship, we'd had a good time talking about them being a nice, compact thing to collect. We'll see.

But if I ever see a vintage tricone guitar for a song - it's mine!

Apart from collecting small infernal combustion engines (I have about 1000 of them) I also indulge in model aircraft, but not generally speaking those high tech R/C ones, I get my thrills by building and flying Control line speed models like the photo attached. This one is powered by a Novarossi .21 car engine and does around 180mph, if I had time to sort it out I reckon I could get it up to 200mph, but alas work gets in the way :(

How long is your control line and how many standing 360's do you do before throwing up? :)

I play golf as part of "work", but don't consider it to be a hobby.

Accumulating Ferraris and Ferrari stuff is where most of my free time goes...

Line is 17.69m(58') rotational speed is about 1 lap every 1.3 seconds, and I don't do standing 360's I have to run around a pylon, which makes for hard work. Don't get dizzy until I stop, which is usually about 15-20laps. Never thrown up, even after several hundred laps when I used to do team racing ;)

I don't feel like I have any hobbies. I love Ferraris and have a fair collection of Ferrari related stuff, but I don't feel like I hold a candle to some of you. My wife agrees after having been to Robs house! :)

I used to spend a lot of time buying wine, but now I'm up to about 400 bottles and don't really buy much any more. I don't drink much of it either, that's the truly sad part.

I love to ski (on the snow, doing it in the water is called 'water skiing'), but I live in Texas so I don't get to do much of it either.

There are a lot of things I 'do', but I'm not really passionate about any of them.
