What about their crash rating and the clips of the head-ons inside the crash centers?

I decided to buy the car. What's a few hundred more on the insurance if it's a free car basically......

I went for blue metallic on black cloth with a silver safety cell. Gonna drive down to CA and wait outside PeterS's house when he leaves in his 4Runner........

congrats Keith - at least you don't have to pay our double fees out here in socialist ICBC!

I'd suggest steering clear of those crazy Cali's myself :)

Oh, and let me know when you drive out here, we'll do a drag race somewhere (not near the west-end, not that type of drag)

    Momentum= Mass X Velocity

At the point of impact, the velocity of both vehicles being equal ( actually a negative ... sudden deceleration) the masses are definitely paramount. Survival Cell... in a Smart Car... This is one step above a golf cart. This ain't Air Force One. Anyone that would rather be in a Smart Car than a H2 in a head on collision is suicidal.

    John.....

I'd rather take my chances than in a 308 GTS, Modial cabriolet or 328.

What do you think ? They'll be pulling your dental records if you get into a serious accident in either one of those. And you own all 3. That is if you're aren't a totally flattened crispy critter during the aftermath. Listen to yourself........totally illogical.

    Tom.....

You're on......you haven't chipped the Honda Fit yet have you ?

Come on down! We'll drive your Smart to Yosemite (Got a roof rack for Melodie?) and put it through the paces in the great Sierra's! I do hope you like the car and will keep us posted on your first few thousand miles. I'd be interested to see what the comfort factor is after a 500 mile drive.

Another person posting another simple formula I learned in Jr. High school *rolls eyes*. If the survival cell is intact, the size of the vehicles do not matter. You comparing the safety cell of a SMART car against a golf cart disqualifies you as someone who knows what their talking about. If the bigger vehicle fails to break into the passenger area, then the size is meaningless. Too many people fail to read and comprehend, it boggles the mind.

My comment regarding the golf cart was meant to be humorous, as most would comprehend. But it is not near as humorous as your comment

"If the bigger vehicle fails to break into the passenger area, then the size is meaningless.."

Now that is funny. Guess I also missed that day of Junior High School that that simple formula was taught.
It doesn't take much to visualize the results of a H2 and a Smart Car hitting head on at 20 mph. If it boggles your mind that too many people will fail to read and comprehend , then there is a strong possibility that most would find your comments argumentative and illogical.

Now go find a third grader to argue with, as I am going to ignore your juvenile comments and *roll my eyes*.

Grats Einstein, you can grasp 2nd grade English. I used likely in the exact same form that you called me out on...likely as in I do not know for sure. How about you post a complete repair bill for every part wrecked on a Smart Car instead of picking out the cheapest bits?

    Come on Albert, try harder.

Hurt feelings? Seems so. If the large, big, bad vehicle fails to impact the safety cell, what does it's size have to do with anything? Veering down the road it has the potential to do more damage than a smaller vehicle but again, if it fails to intrude, what does the size have to do with it??? Nothing. If a plane lands on a road and hits a car and doesn't cripple the safety cell, who cares if it was a plane? The seat belts and air bags are all that impacts the passengers.

Thought process not needed in some schools? dr... in front of your name... god help the ill.

Simple. The smaller lighter vehicle will decelerate quicker at the moment of impact due to a lack of momentum & mass. Unless the occupants are wearing a racing harness and HANS system, they are in greater danger than the occupants of the larger vehicle. Crumple zones help, but ultimately the combined energy has to go to zero, and the smaller car is going to take the brunt of that force.

Yes... and if the safety cell is intact, then the car took an amount of damage that it was designed too... safely. Even in your scenario if the passengers are wearing helmets and harnesses and the opposing vehicle lands on top of the car, they may get crushed but then the SUV type vehicle may have a roll over. Point is, if the cars in question have their compartments intact and nothing comes through the glass, then the "size" question is over. The interior components of each vehicle are responsible for the survival of the occupants.

Smart cars come w/ airbags and passive restraint belts. So why the harnesses and Hans? Reason racecars don't use airbags is because they'd blow all the time. Harnesses aren't the best for avoiding internal injury. I've broken all my ribs and sternum in a 50mph impact wearing harnesses which would have been less injury than seatbelts designed to give some and an airbag.

I'm still trying to figure out why people are comparing a Hummer to a Smart??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Go tell that to the IIHS, who also crash test vehicles to the *driver's side*

    Tom.....

Brabus and Lorinser make a sport exhaust for it, and I am currently looking for an ECU flash.......I may just buy a Brabus computer and plug it in, depends on the cost obviously.

We can get the Brabus SMART edition over here but it does not have the 90 HP engine they get in Europe.......just the bodykit, suspension, wheels and exhaust.......bummer......I expected the engine too for the extra $4K.

It's probably cheap to mod the car......we'll see what it all entails.

How many car lenths do you want ?

Since I suck at physics, please help me out with the following : If I were driving a Smart when I had a head-on in my Bronco II (A guy in a brand new '05 Dodge Ram crew cab pulled into my lane at 25 MPH and I was doing about 40MHP), would I have suffered less or been hurt more?

In the Bronco II (No air bags) at the time of impact, my head spider-cracked the windshield (yes, that does explain a lot :D) and my chest bent the steering wheel into the dash panel). I was well shaken with a few bruised ribs and my neck hurt for a few months.

The air bags alone would have made you suffer much less.

Correct. However, the RIGHT question is "If I hit a Dodge Ram head on at a combined 60+ MPH, would I be less likely to be injured in a Smart, or a similarly equipped modern vehicle about the size and mass of a Bronco II?"

    F=(M)(V)

Watch the crash video with the MB for your answer........an offset crash has more energy and the result was obvious.

What would really worry me is hitting that Dodge Ram head on in a 3X8...........

3X8? Is that the W & L of the Smart or did you mean 4X4?
