The F40 was starting to develop a high speed miss, felt like a bad spark plug.

Chris Hill at Autosport replaced all the plugs, it helped, but did not cure the problem. Upon investigation we discovered 4 wires that were severly corroded. Chris said he would order just those wires, I told him it was crazy only to replace 4 of the 8 wires...

Then he told me the wires ranged from $135 to $475.00 per wire! A new set is about $3,600.00!

So.......... I guess I am replacing 4 wires since the other 4 are in perfect shape...

This is my first such issue with the F40, so I guess I am lucky, I understand GTO's and 512TR's have the same issue...

These spark plug wires sure give you a shock!

Please inform me why these cannot be made even for half that cost? What is special? The socket itself? Shielding? Or the prancing horse on the shielding?

Actually, there are outfits that will make replacements if you send them a sample of what you want.

Check this place out: http://www.kingsborne.com/ They carry all the components too, like the Beru connectors used by Ferrari and Porsche.

Look under "other products", then under "connectors".

There is nothing special about the wires in a Ferrari. They are as standard as the water you fill in the windshield wiper tank.

High quality high temperature silicone is perfect for any turbo charged car. As the F40 plugs (NGK C8E) are non resistor type, the resistor has to be in the wire or connectors. But anyone who reconditions such wires will know. $3600 is a little too much... I’m sure you will get them 90% cheaper if you try. And don’t expect original Ferrari parts to be to be best quality you can buy!

Wow and I thought $1200 was high for a set of BMW 750 wires!

Buy some cheap wires at Summit racing and cut them up. Or you can call Truechoice and they can get you some Magnecor wires custom made. They look just like stock. The wire can be replaces separate of the plug end boot which is probably the expensicve piece. While you are at it have your coils checked (They frequently fail and cause fires). Your car seemed to be running a little rough in Monterey. I wonder if your fusebox is OK. I am pulling mine this weekend for an inspection.

Well 4 of the plug wires were corroded, that is the easy part, the wires cleaned up the plug extensions were also corroded and they are beyond repair.

I noticed the rough running for the first time in Monterey, but it really became apperant on my high speed run to Big Sur...

We first put in new plugs today and that helped, but that is when we isolated the problem to the plug wires and extensions. The wires are actually fine, but the extensions have to be replaced. The source listed above (Kingsborne)does have replacement wires for far less than Ferrari, but alas, no replacement extensions for a F40.

We will see if this is a 100% cure on Friday when the new wires and extensions are installed...

    cross your fingers!

That kind of money for plug wires is simply highway robbery. I would refuse to pay that just for the point.

I had a few wires melt on my car so I just went down to my local performance parts shop, bough an 8 foot spool of MSD brand Super Conductor wires (very nice quality and probably identical if not better than OEM Ferrari wires or any other OEM), a few clips (you could probably re-use these as well if they are not corroded), crimping tool and just made my own wires for less than the price of the junk OEM wires. The valve cover boots you will have to re-use, just cut the old wires and they should slide off.

    8' spool..............$80 if I recall correctly
    cimping tool........$10
    plug/coil clips......$10

Hans, thanks for your comments, but it is not the wire it is the extensions that need to be replaced. Ferrari will not just sell the extensions, the wire and the extension is the only way you can buy it...

Oh I see, I just skimmed by the later posts....

I bet the same extensions were used on more than just the F40 they just make another part # for the F40 even though it's the same part used on another model, so there may be a cheaper aftermarket alternative.

    Perhaps:

Buy them online and put them on yourself. Just replace them one at a time so you don't get them crossed or forget what order they go in.

The F40 head is the same design as the 328 QV. Does it use angled plug ends or are these straight? I am still interested in doing the coil-on-plug conversion but so far I have not found a suitable COP that fits correctly or that is CDI compatible. Any ideas? I remember a post where someone did a 328 QV.

Hans, I have the straight pipes as well. Too much attention from the Cops and earplugs required. The smell of an F40 with on cats and on race gas will tahe you back to the traffic jams of the 70's.
