Hello, I am planning on redoing my kitchen and I have some questions about appliances: I started looking, and found that I want a 'built-in' refrigerator since that looks really nice. The brands that make the built ins I am looking at are: Kitchen Aid, Sub Zero, Bosch and Thermador. Kitchen Aid - Pros: good looking appliances. Can buy everything Kitchen Aid that match. Would probably do more than I need. Least expensive of my choices. Cons: Although nice, they are not 'name brand' commercial type appliances. For more money ($2,000-3,000), I could get the other brand(s) that may help with resale of my house later on. Sub Zero - Pros: Everyone knows this brand. Excellet resale. Cons: Only make refrigerators - I would have to buy some other brand(s) for the remaining appliances, so everything woudn't match. Somewhat expensive. The water/ice dispenser on the door is very small (couldn't fill a pitcher or jug - only large enough for a single glass) Bosch - Pros: Good commercial brand. Good resale. Cons: Make everything but refrigerators - I would have to buy some other brand of refrigerator, so everything wouldn't match. Thermador - Pros: Good commercial brand. Good resale. Cons: Make everything but the microwave - I would have to buy a Bosch microwave, so everything wouldn't match. The water/ice dispenser looks plastic and cheap on such an expensive refrigerator. Any opinions on any of the above brands? Any other brands I should consider? Suggestions? Thanks!
FRED BABY...HELLO DARE... I DID THE SAME SHIIT WITH MY WIFE 5 YRS AGO WITH THE BLOW OUT OF MY NEW KITCHEN....... I SIMPLY WENT WITH THE FRIDGEADAIRE (SP) PROFESSIONAL SERIES (PRODUCTS... STOVE MICROWAVE FRIDGE DISHWASHER OVEN I HAVE THEM FOR ALMOST 4 YRS NOW, NEVER A PROBLEM, JUST REPLACE THE WATER FILTER FOR THE FRIDGE EVERY 6 MONTHS.. GO TO LOWES..HAVE A GREAT SELECTION, GOOD PRICES, FREE DELIVERY (AND TAKE YOUR OLD APPLIANCES) AND GAVE ME 24 MONTHS FREE INTEREST WHEN I BOUGHT IT GOOD LUCK..HOPE THIS HELPS.. BRUCE
Hi Bruce!! How are you? Good to hear from ya! I looked at the Fridgidaire (sp-?) professional series, but they don't make a built-in refrigerator. If I went with Fridgidaire (non-built in refrigerator) it would be about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the Thermadoor, Bosch, Kitchen-Aid, Sub-Zero stuff. Although I would love to save the $$, I definitely want to go with a built-in refrigerator. It really makes the kitchen look nice.
I SAW SOME BUILT IN MAYTAGS AT LOWES 2 WEEKS AGO, BUT DONT KNOW HOW GOOD THEIR FRIDGES ARE.....DID YOU ALSO TRY SEARS???? TO SAVE $$$$ BRUCE
Thermador is the way to go. My last two Street of Dreams homes had all Thermador built-ins. We have the worlds largest appliance and furniture store here (Nebraska Furniture Mart owned by Warren Buffett) and they removed the Viking line from the store and it's now at a little cabinet store. I have used GE profile in the past. Give WOLF a try, good quality and pimp looks. Thermador does not make micro's because the look ghetto in the kitchen and you should not have an ugly ice/water dipenser in your new kitchen. Do a Thermador built-in fride, gas cook top with griddle, warming drawer underneath with large vent hood above. Use the Thermador double ovens and put the micro in the pantry to keep it out of site. A professional kitchen does not include a micro. I don't have pics on my computer of this years entry, but I'll dig up some others for you. Kitchens are our specialty.
Here's a GE Profile from a few years ago. Sorry my ugly mug is in the pic. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here's one with 2 Gen Air ranges and fridge and a shot of it's entry. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's worth the risk if I can get just one guy like you to let me build them a new estate. Don't make me bust out pics of the one we're building with a 12 car underground garage.
Whatever you do, do not buy the Bosch dishwasher! Biggest POS we have ever owned and it still does not work correctly after 2 years. I've made a part-time career out of waiting for the Bosch service guy to come out and tell me nothing is wrong with it. Well nothing aside from the fact that the door is separating and the dishes come out dirty almost every time. BTW: We have the GE Profile built-in fridge and it's been fine, probably the most reliable ice maker I have ever owned.
I'd like to take a moment to bad-mouth one appliance company: JennAir. Our JennAir microwave was junk (turntable warped x3, rust, bad electronics). Our JennAir range was junk (burned out circuit board, burned out thermocouple, front access panel fell off x100, grease traps clogged, etc. etc.etc). Our SubZero fridge had a problem and the service people were idiots, just threw expensive parts at it over and over.
Bruce - No, I didn't try Sears. I think they carry the same consumer brands as everyone else (Whirlpool, Kenmore, etc...) I'm really trying to decide if I want the consumer brands or something more commercial. Isellpower - Why don't I want Ice/Water in the refrig. door? Viking/Wolf are good gas ideas, but I only have electric. I want a micro since it goes above the cooktop, and, yes, I use a micro. GE is like the Kitchen Aid stuff, it's great consumer stuff, but it costs almost as much as the Thermador & Bosch units. 356racing - interesting about the Bosch d/w. Miltonian - Thanks for the heads up on JenAir. I only know one person who has JenAir stuff, but they never use any of it. Interesting about the Sub-Zero - this is the first bad thing I have heard of them.
I had an appliance repair man at my house a few weeks ago. I asked him if he knew anything about the European brands. His response was "I know you shouldn't buy them!". He then gave me a 10 minute story about his attempt to hunt down a part for an LG washer. I asked him to look at my Asko dryer (which I HATE) and he's been looking for a part for it ever since. And don't get me started on the Asko washer I was given when I bought a new weekend house. Who ever heard of a washer needing 220V connections? And it's DIFFERENT connection than the dryer uses. I'll never buy another non-american brand again. Give me a Kenmore, Frigidaire, Maytag, GE, Jenn Aire, etc.
ALSO STAY AWAY FROM " MIEHLE" (SP) DISHWASHERS.HAD ONE FOR 2 WEEKS THEN THREW IT OUT OF MY HOUSE SUB ZERO IS ANOTHER NO-NO SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO FOR FRIDGIDAIRE...............
Keepin it simple!!!!! Bank the difference for Carbon's Enzo! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
In my humble opinion if you are going to do a built in fridge I would also do a built in oven/cook top with vent hood and build in the mico elsewhere. Here is a pic from Wolf of what I am talking about. It even shows electric. Image Unavailable, Please Login
isellpower - I have a built-in oven and separate drop-in cooktop, (getting new granite countertops too!!) but I am not changing my cabinets (I have very nice 42" custom, solid maple cabinets), so I won't do the hood and I need the OTR microwave. darth - LOL. I can always count on you for the 'thinking outside of the box' (in this case, outside of the house) ideas!!!
Is this to look good or are you really going to use it? If you are going to use it then go with the commercial (Viking, Sub Zero, Thermador, etc). Otherwise, if you just want the look then I'd go with KitchenAid - looks like a commerical unit and is a great product at a lesser price. Additionally, you are pretty limited in the commercial space with only electric - most of the commercial stuff runs off gas. By the way, a good solution for the microwave is to build it into a bottom cabinet - I have mine built into my island. You can still get the commercial look of the vent and still get a microwave IN the kitchen.
Don't worry too much about brand names, but rather coordinate & match design of each units in the kitchen. People don't buy a house based on brands of appliances, but values the appearance. (according to realtors I dealt in the past) I recommends domestic brands for repair purpose. However,be aware of OEMs, as they don't carry repair parts for sub-contracted brands for so long.
Our microwave is a cheapo $59 unit. Sits on top of the dryer in the laundry closet behind louvered doors. What can you cook in a microwave that's worth a $h!t anyway?
milstanselnino - I think a kitchen is an important room in a house when you are buying/selling, so, yes I think it will help with resale. The Kitchen Aid stuff is about $9k, Bosch/Thermador stuff runs about $10-11k. It may be worth a grand or so to have commercial vs. typical brand stuff. I'm trying to decide if the extra few $ are worth it for commercial brand appliances. pdiack- I don't think I will ever use it all to it's full potential. But, I will use the stuff and I want it to look good. The cabinets are already designed with the microwave over the cooktop. I will probably keep it that way. Besides, I use the microwave a lot. Defrosting stuff, heating stuff. TigerAce - what is OEM?
You are right. Sorry for my narrow view, I was thinking of the appliances themselves, not as the kitchen as a whole. oops
