I ordered some Frech Doors to upgrade the rear doors that go from the house to the backyard. It was done at Home Depot in Southern CA. Door was paid for upfront, along with purchases of some other large items.

They told me it would be about 8 weeks till delivery. That was not a problem. On the 7th week they called me and told me it would be delayed by three days. No big deal I thought, and told my installer that I needed to reschedule.

So my installer shows up on the new promised date, and no french doors. I call Home Depot. They put me on hold for 30 minutes. I hang up, call again, and they put me on hold for 45 minutes while they "locate" my order. I couldn't drive down, because I was out of town. Nonetheless, they tell me door will be delayed two more weeks but they willl "compensate me."

Two more weeks go by, no word for them. The installer has come and gone for the second time! I go down there, and they tell me, it will be a while longer.

Now it has been about 11-12 weeks, and after repeated phone calls and promises of delivery, there still is no French door, and the installer has come and gone 3 times (he had to be paid for his time).

Have anybody else has this kind of trouble from home depot? Is there anythign I could really do? Do I have any recourse in this manner, that you guys may suggest?

At this point, I just really need the door, to finish the project, and I am just frustrated. They have been very good through all my other purchases and I never had a problem with them, and thus always give them the benefit of the doubt. But this time, I have no more patience. :(

    Help?

Interesting post. I live in the Midwest, and contacted Home Depot about new windows, by special order. They sent someone out to measure, and I asked to see some samples. He called the next week to say they're on their way. Nothing since then, that was about six weeks ago.

    They won't get my business.

Home Depot is convenient but i too learned the hard way not to count on them. Friend just bought cabinets for his kitchen, half way through realizes he's missing a few...no fun.
I ended up buying from specialty lumber yards for bigger ticket items.

You are lucky they didn't do the door install! I had a nightmare that ended in me getting the credit card charges reversed and the door re-replaced by a real contractor.

Home Despot is great for nuts and bolts, but if you go for anything bigger you'll get screwed!

I hope you don't have a gaping hole in your house right now.

Usually in a case when I have work done on my place and I am out of town, I have the contractor/handyman order the supplies himself. A few more bucks on your side but atleast he does not spend more money coming out for nothing.

I too had issues with Home Depot not getting my order on time. I ordered materials because I built desks for my entire marketing dept at BCBG, a place that HAS to be hot and fashionable, and bits and pieces of the orders came in which peeved everyone. I had to explain to Vogue why I had beaten up Ikea coffee tables and no desks.

Vogue is easy to appease, you proabaly have a significant other that is really pissed at you right now. We know it ain't your fault, but somehow, she'll make it.

No gaping hole in the house. Yes my contractor usually just buys stuff and works on the things himself when I am out of town. However, I had ordered the doors a while back on my own, when he was busy with something.

As far as sig other, don't even mention it. Sigh. Looks like I am not the only one getting shafted by home depot.

    DaveM
Yeah I wasn't going to have them do the install. Sorry to hear about your friend. I did the kitchen cabinets through them too (it was pretty pricey, almost 308 selling price!) and they came through with that ok. I never had a problem with them. Do you suggest I go cancel the order, and have them give me the money back? It is a full custom order, and I am not sure they will even change it.

    ArtS
Yeah, I always have my guy do the install. I never had a prob with Home depot before, thus I trusted them. I wonder if they will let me cancell the order now, since it was a custom made door. I mean what good would cancelling do, since I will have to wait a few more months in order to get another one made by someone else. :(

Looks like many people are having a bad experience with them.

I just wonder what to do. I know MARKPDX with the corvette problem is going through GM management and stuff. I mean would writing a letter to Home Depots regional manager or home office or customer service do anything? You would think after spending many thousands of dollars, they would have some respect and treat their customers fairly.

Try escalating it one level - to the manager of the store. Explain that they are costing you time and money. If this doesn't work, go to the executive level.

If you just want your money back, just ask. Since they are late, the should refund it. If they don't, take action with your credit card co.

    Regards,

    Art S.

Why don't you contact the manufacturer directly? HD is obviously getting jacked around and you're being forced to deal with employees who don't really care. Other than that I'd find another source. Search the net etc. Another French door can't be that hard to find? Good luck.

contact Gentry. Seriously - he can mock up a picture of the French doors (graphic design), fly you down to Home Depot HQ in his jet, finance a takeover of Home Depot and fly you back to his home office (in his jet) have "his guy" paint the new doors (vibrant red) and then you two could celebrate with one of his new cigars.

this is no joke - Gentry can get the job done!

I have a friend who was screwed by the regular HD over a residential front door buy & install. He got satisfaction eventually by nagging daily.

On the other hand, we had our citchen counters done by Home Depto EXPO, and our experience was just fine. Reasonable timeframes, good customer service and followup, good installation.

    So ymmv

Good Luck! Escalation is your friend.

A friend of mine used Home Depot to remodel his bathroom. I didn't even know they could put something like that together. The electrical guy screwed something up to where new wires had to be run from the breaker box, then some other guy hit a water pipe with a drill and the place got soaked. Then the sheetrock guy sprayed the walls with the same texture as the ceiling. He didn't want to put up new walls so he sanded all the walls down. About 3-4 months later they got it all fixed. I would not have beleived any of it if I didn't see the end results of each screw up. I guess they don't care who they use as installers/sub-contractors as long as the price is good.

Contact the district manager in your region for HD. You should get an immediate reply at that level. Going to the manufacturer will do you no good, as HD will not tell you the PO that they have with the manufacturer. If the DM can't help you out in three days, cancel your order and vote with your feet.

I once contacted them to install a new garage doors, and the sub contractor was unprofessional & rude. I immediately drove to HD to cancel the order (which btw, I had to wait 45 mins in CS line).

I will never use HD for any home improvement. They are slow, expensive, & have little control with the materials & sub-contractors. Can you imagine the run around if the job was not done correctly?

I'd say check your yellow pages for a specialist near you. You'd be surprise of the quality & discount.

    Good luck

Here's a case of a company that has amazing core competencies, then ruins their reputation by trying to do things (like general contracting) that they have no competency in. They're trying to be all things to all people.

    Update:

I have talked to the home office (as Bruce suggested) and found the local district manager (as Peter) suggested. THe DM has been rather helpful. While he was working it out, I have gotten the custom french doors delivered. Called my contracter, to come and install them, and he calls me and says, home depot only delivered one part, and nothing else!!

Going to talk to the DM again, for the last time today and hope to get it figured out.

    *sigh*

    Lesson learned.
