I started working on my PPL and have been using a flight sim in between lessons to help get some muscle memory. I've been using MS Flight Sim with a Honeycomb yoke, Logitech pedals and throttle and VR goggles.

Does anyone else use one regularly?

I'm trying to get PPL too, but the medical is taking forever. The FAA is a bureaucratic nightmare if you don't pass the medical at the AME. I put x-plane 10 on my 10yr old kid's computer and use logitech yoke, throttle, and pedals. It's pretty realistic except for the "feel". I can even fly over my neighborhood. It's good for basic flight skills and VOR navigation.

I started with MS Flight Sim and enjoyed the realistic graphics. You can perform a VFR flight using actual ground reference. But I became exasperated using MS for instrument practice. The radios and nav aids just don't work correctly. MS seems to be more a game than something for realistic flight practice. So I switched to X-Plane. Graphics not as good, but it has very realistic controls, radios and navigation. I use Redbird for the yoke, engine controls, flaps and landing gear.

It is ok to use with your checklist and visualize some things. But obviously the controls don’t work the same and in older versions, rudder use was optional. Garmin used to have some good simulators for their devices.

I've been using MS Flight sim for a month or two now and am getting close to my first solo in real life. I found MS Flight sim to be tremendously helpful building muscle memory for the controls. When I first started I constantly had the rudder pedals and throttle backwards in my mind. I would push the throttle in to slow down. Spending a few hours in the simulator I was able to get that straightened out, and was able to get that ingrained properly in my brain. I also found it helpful for practicing maneuvers, particularly stalls.

After picking up a new video card (Nvidia 3090) I switched to using a VR headset, which is awesome.

I have not found it very helpful for doing landings however. It seems way to 'perfect' in the sim, even if you put in a decent wind gusts. In the plane I'm always making constant adjustments. The Logitech rudder pedals kinda suck too.

I've been waiting for X-Plane 12 to come out, I hope that it is a bit more realistic, particularly for the landings.
