    So I picked up a new TV, the Sony KDL-V40XBR1 and a new sony dvd player that upconverts. I'm looking for a reciever and have no reason to spend a ton of money since my room is fairly small. I'm thinking about an Onkyo TX-SR803 with HDMI switching: 2 in, 1 out. Will this reciever pass through the up converted signal?? Also, I now run my HD cable box through the Componet, but should I return it for one with an HDMI since this reciever has the 2 in 1 out??? So freaking confusing.

    The pass-thru on the receiver should "pass-thru" the upconverted signal since the conversion is done in the DVD player and all the receiver does is send it on to the TV when that input is selected. Second, I would definitely run the Cable Box thru the receiver so you can use HDMI. I have had a couple of different HD boxes running on component, and my newest runs thru an HDMI-DVI connector (my TV only has DVI) and i've noticed as significant difference in quality of the picture. Congrats on the new purchase, enjoy. You also might check out www.avsforum.com, it's a fancy A/V site full of useful info.

    I wonder how the quality of the "pass through" is.

    I imagine all the connections have to diminish the picture a bit.

    If you aren't going to get a new HD box, then I wouldn't worry about that Onkyo with video switching.

    As far as cheap recievers that perform, you can't go wrong with Onkyo, Yamaha or Denon.

    My last 3 recievers have been Onkyo's.

    Right, I can't answer the questions specifically raised with that piece of equipment- the manufacturer must have a wholly owned sub here that you could call, but a couple general observations:

    switchers do add a level of garbage, at least in the analog domain-

    staying in the digital domain is probably better for switching purposes than after D/A conversion;

    the component with the best D/A conversion is the one that should be used for that process, eg, does the receiver have a better converter than your cable box?

    I run my DVD signal thru an SDI output into a HD Leeza, which is an upconverter/native rate scaler and video switcher. It outputs in HDI directly into my dlp projector where it is 'converted' for the first time.

    That assumes you have a digital video output on your cable box and that your receiver is doing a good job of converting the signal- or are you running a digital signal from the receiver directly to the TV and converting there?
