Im currently looking to buy a new house/condo. Many have the so called Cat 5 wiring installed, however I dont see any HDMI connections. Why is this? I was planning on mounting a tv above the fireplace, so does this mean i have to install an HDMI cable to the preexisting wiring?
Of course, w/ the move to wireless EVERYTHING it may be a mute point.

No one runs HDMI throughout an entire house... You will need to do the proper chasing of wires if you want a "clean" Install... I would chase at least 3 or 4 HDMI cables to the tv location for all the things you want to hook up...

You can run HDMI over 2 cat-5 cables. I've never attempted it, but a friend of mine has it working fine. Can't speak to the cost of the adapters, or the potential limitations.

You can also run HDMI over single Cat5/6 cable now.
We run HDMI up to 100 meters over 2 x Cat5/6 using 'BALUNS' which have now become relatively inexpensive.
There are also new systems which run over 'managed networks' but the cost is higher and more suited to installations with many inputs and outputs.

Please dont think of relying solely on wireless, I know your house construction is different than over here, but it is a nightmare for us.
