Homelink Upgrade

Has anyone replaced the original module with the more current version? Homelink changed the formatting so the originals won't link to any newer garage door openers.

If not, has anyone ever removed the upper interior part where it is mounted? I will be checking the WSM and figuring it out. If I can get it apart reasonably I will pull out the module and find something that works. Of course I will share here as well but hoping someone can save me a step or two.
