So I'd be curious what you guys here in S. Louisiana have heard about homeowner's insurance options these days. Might want to shop it around but would like to hear if anyone else has done this recently.

Chartis is by far the best homeowner insurer in the US. Companies like Allstate/State Farm and others are notorious for selling policies that are illusions of protection. In my experience They are wonderful at collecting premiums yet when you make a claim they become your complete adversely when you need the insurance (whether you realize it or not). They are very skilled at the claim management process and can fleece you with a smile and without you realizing it.

I can agree with John on State Farm. They screwed me good on a fairly minor claim from Katrina. I did get some satisfaction jerking 2 homeowners policies, 2 umbrella policies and 5 car policies from them though.

State Farm decided to stop writing new policies for existing customers about a week before I bought my house. So they lost by default. . .

I ended up going with Farm Bureau (agent is a friend of mine) who actually beat the best prices that I got from two other insurance brokers who were quoting me prices from several companies. I was worried that I was going to have to tell him sorry but I was surprised they came in with the best rates.

Let me know if you'd like my agent's contact info.

If you want the "best" though I think that would probably be Chubb, but it is very pricey.

Funny with State Farm after Katrina there were tons of people getting screwed, and then tons of people who got to remodel their houses for free after the storm. Many people I know really ended up being much much better off after their homes got Broussarded.
