As many of you know this is a pet race of mine. I am one of the few journalists who regurally covers the last Great open road race, as a refresher it is a 2000mile 7day balls to the wall race from the farthest southern point in mexico to the texas boarder.... Vintage race cars pre 1965 and more fun than you should be allowed to have.

There are a bunch of my photos in Classic Cars Magazine out of the UK this month.

Well BAR HONDA has announced they are going to run their F1 package on the velocity stages, these are open 2 lane roads through mountains, plains, and some of the most stunning scenery in the world which is never really obstructed by guardrails or any pesky things like speed limits...

**FORMULA 1 PILOTOS TO COMPETE IN LA CARRERA
According to Sportscar.com and other Mexican internet publications, like El Universal.Online, two drivers for BAR Honda, a Formula 1 racing team, will participate in the Pan Am next November. This may be the primary reason why the Carrera was postponed until November. The last GP event of the year is in Brazil at the end of October.

So, it looks like we will be joined by Ruben Barrichello and Gil de Ferran this year. Also, it is possible that the Mexican CART driver Mario Dominguez will also compete. Two of Gil de Ferran’s cousins have already competed in LCP.

Barricello, Gil de Ferran, and Dominquez were in Oaxaca on July 26-28 at a photo shoot arranged by BAR Honda, Eduardo Leon, and Lucky Strike. Juan Sarmiento’s winning Studebaker was apparently a major prop for the photo shoot. The entourage also visited the ruins at Monte Albán.

The participation of BAR Honda should make it much easier for Mr. Leon to find a new lead sponsor.

Ahem, did I just read what I thought I did?

2 modern F1 cars on an open mountain road with no guardrails?

It is not April 1st is it? I can see them going in a straight line at Bonneville but racing a modern F1 over a mountain? I mean, hello! Something doesn't connect here.

I guess they don't care much for their drivers nor their cars.

That excerpt from the press release seems odd to me, given that it mentions BAR Honda and the team no longer goes by that name.

Yes, yes....I *really* would like to know exactly what they're driving. I can't see it being a modern F1 car, considering the race is restricted to pre-1975 cars, and that hundreds of millions of dollars have been sunk into the development of an F1 car. I can't see them just letting RB "open 'er up" on some Mexican mountain road.

What I need to add, though, is that if they ARE running a modern F1, I think I'm going to be booking myself a flight to Mexico to watch!!!

If that's true, that would be the coolest thing to watch! :p

At the rate they're going, what's their next step? Making US street legal F1 cars? :D

I think they're only referring to the drivers, not to the cars. I surmise that they'll probably be running modified Honda or Acura road cars.

A pre-1965 Acura is hard to come by. First Honda car sold in US was 1969.
An F1 car suspension and undercarriage wouldn't survive La Carrera PanAmerica. And where would the codriver sit?

Its either totally bogus, or they are using different pre-1965 cars, or they have chosen a very smooth stage to run as a marketing publicity stunt (which I doubt most).

This is the article (in Spanish) from El Universal.
    http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/deportes/80498.html

It does not say what cars they would be driving but for sure it's not an F1. Apparently they came to Oaxaca, Mexico to test a few cars and analize the posibility of taking part in the race...

It seems impossible to me. The drivers yes, the F1 cars, Hell no. I don't think they can raise the suspension enough to get ground clearance for a regular road. One stone and all those aerodynamic bits and pieces will become a shredded mess. Razorsharp bits of carbon fibre cluttering the road for the people following.

I have been to London a couple of years ago when they blocked off a street for the F1 cars to do some drivebys and it was a major operation: The whole thing got delayed by an hour because of crowd control and concerns about safety etc. They had sweepers out there cleaning that one road all day to make it clean enough for the F1 cars. Here we are talking about a Mexican mountain road. I believe it when I see it.

I totally agree, no F1 car is going to attempt entering the event. Besides suspension, ride height, no codriver seat, no space for a spare tire let alone everything else required by rules, ... issues, where are they going to carry enough fuel for the longer legs between stages.
And any organizer who re-writes the rules to allow modern cars in a historic event has a screw loose.
Hey, let me enter my Evo.
