No idea but it is BAD FORM to post a photo of somebody's vehicle registration. You are unlikely to get an answer even if the owner is on fchat with such a stupid post

Sorry if I did something wrong with that post. In the US I never was concerned about demonstrating my lic plate since it is publicly displayed at all times. I do not make it a habit to wear a disguise when I drive me cars around.

You are missing the point. Driving around is one thing - that is required by the law! If you disguised your plate while you were driving around the police might no be so happy. Posting someone's licence plate on an internet chat is entirely different

+1 especially in HK, too small of a place, could easily track people down.

I have been intrigued by this for a long time. Let me preface by saying I would never post someone's license plate. Having said that, what exactly could anyone do with a license plate? I mean it's not like you can't walk over to a fancy hotel and see a nice car with the license plate in full view. What could anyone do with that information?

Honestly, I don't live in HK, but I dont see the difference. If it is out on the street, people can see it, yes it is required by law, but it does the same thing as a picture on the internet. Chances are that if someone were to want to steal the car or track the person, they would find out the license plate in other ways too. Plus I dont see how the license gives me any information about the person, his name, his home etc. you would have to crack government records to get that information correct? Again I dont know specifically hk, but this has been a long running debate, and the truth is now with so many digital cameras, photos of license plates will be up on the internet some blurred some not...

Not sure about HK laws, but in Malaysia, I can just give a license plate number to a registered Car Dealer and/ or Finance Company and they can affect a full disclosure of the said car full particulars, i.e Registration Date/Make and Model/VIN/Year manufactured/Engine Capacity....and the name and address of the current Owner... (In the old days, me meself can get them via the Land Transport Authority for a measly equivalent of USD6.00 but it has since been 'tightened' up :D and only 'bonafide' car dealers are allowed to do so...)

The purpose is for us to track down a particular number plate that we'd like to own and we might have to purchase the vehicle outright as well aside from the 'real' purpose of establishing whether said car and number matches for would be used vehicles purchasers...

Back to the point, I subscribe to the belief that we shouldn't disclose the license plates of cars to the Net, unless the car(s) belong to us and we're comfortable doing so...

You are spot on. It is easy to track down ownership of a car with a plate number. Also address of registered owner and in all liklihood whether there is a loan on the car

Bottomline is that the poster put a car on the net for no reason at all (other than curiosity?) and that is an invasion of someone's privacy. This is a fun forum where respect is a must or it will degenerate quickly. There are 50,000+ registered users in Fchat and I bet less than a hundred are in HK. Poster just gave 49,900 people info they would not otherwise have
