    Hi all,

I have a left hand drive car and there are two opening mechanisms by the driver. I ordinary lever that pulls backward and a emergency wire which is only a hoop.

The latch has one in going wire and the the hoop is just the wire made into a handle.

The lever only open the left hand hood latch and the emergency wire only the right hand latch.

Can someone please explain how it is supposed to work and to fix it. Pictures please.

    Kind regards
    //Rob

Normally you have another emergency wire in the glove box, so that's one emergency wire for each adjacent latch. The lever operates two cables simulataneously. So it is 4 cables, 2 per latch.

Not sure how the lever cables are supposed to be linked in stock form as mine were "fixed" with bycicle cables.

Please clarify Series I or II 400i, or earlier car. Series II has a solenoid actuator.

    Hi
Its a Series I. I do have two emergency straps, one on the driver side and one in the glove compartment. But there is only one wire to the lever from what I can see. Maybe a split in the engine compartment. Will dive into it next week but I thought I would ask here since there is nothing in the manuals.

In the spare parts catalog, there are three wires in total, one from the lever (presumably for the two locks) and one emergency wire on each side for each lock.

The picture in the spare parts manual does not show how this is all arranged.

I can take some pics of the mechanism for you. The 2 latches on each side of the hood must be connected by a series of wires and levers…

    Hi Jaredsalinsky,

That would be great. What I need is to understand how the single wire to the lever on the driver side opens both latches. Where/how is the Y-split?

    A picture would be great.

Here are pictures of the driver side and passenger side (battery) of the hood latch. The black sheathed wire is the one that angles up and goes across to the other side. I can visually see when I pull the hood latch that both latch mechanisms are working. I will try to get a video of that for you, but it may take having a second person…

Thanks Jared for the very clear pictures, I could not match that level of quality, however I was able to record a video of the central mechanism (the cable bracket in attachment).

Contrary to what I wrote on September 6, there are 5 wires in total (not 3):

    2 emergency wires

1 wire from the lever to the cable bracket (top wire shown in the video)

2 wires from the cable bracket to each latch

Pulling the lever triggers a clockwise rotation of the cable bracket (seen from the engine bay), this rotation pulls the two wires going to each latch.

Yup. That’s a great vid… and prob would’ve been helpful if I sent you that pic/vid in the first place!
So what exactly are you missing? Or is it your latch that is messed up?
Anyway glad you figured it out and good luck!

Thanks Jared, actually the hood opening works correctly on my 400, the explanations are really for user sebackman who posted the original question.

    Great stuff. Huge thank you!!

I will dig into that when I get to the garage next week and report back. The pictures and the descriptions will help a lot.

    All the best
